This is a bitter sweet post.

I did my PT test today - and as anyone on here knows, I'm not great at PT...I believe in it, support it, but struggle at it. I've been here in Guam since Dec and here, PT has a very dominant presence in our day. So I've been working hard every day. Last year I passed only because I had gone to NCOA and got to a 14:24 - but after that, the time slipped back to 15:00+. My unit there just wasn't interested in PT.

What a diff a year and a new unit makes. Today, I ran in a (drumroll....)

13:30

I actually moved up a point bracket...yeah me. I haven't run that fast since probably Basic or Tech School when I was 14 years younger and about 50 pounds lighter.

The bitter part is - the cost of that fast run was a low situp total. So I think I still failed by a point or less (my PTL told me to let him do the math - so we'll see). But I think I failed by about 10 situps. Bad I failed - but last year I maxed my situps...so I know if I can run that fast and keep working on it to drop it even more - than by the time I'd have to retest, I'll max my p/u and s/u and maybe push an 80 on my test.

So bittersweet - fastest run time ever, but still fail. I've failed before (2 years ago) but it's because my run time was over 15 minutes. Now my run time is there where I want it - just have to get back in the gym for strength training. Easier to work on that than run time....

Okay - I'll stop rambling - I was just happy and as much as I post on here about PT when the discussion comes up (weekly), I thought I'd post my accomplishment. Still mad I failed, but at least I failed something I can work on. It's like doing bad on a test - you passed the calculus part cuz you worked so hard on it, but failed the English part where you usually excel. You know with a retest, you'll get your English back while keeping your calculus.

Smile

Good job, you should still feel good about what you accomplished! Keep it up!

That's awesome to hear about the run. Running has NEVER been my strong suit, so I can sympathize! Now you've got a visible, pointed goal and not just "trying to pass".

Keep up your running regimen and squadron PT schedule, but something you may want to take into consideration is to get down and do a set of situps and a set up pushups to failure every hour on the hour at home at nights. Once failure is no longer 3, assign yourself a target number to do every hour on the hour. Raise that number by two every week.

You'll get there! With your mindset you will blow it out of the water come retest!

Congratulations, but don't expect the Air Force PT program to whip you into shape, you have to be self motivated and make fitness a part of your life.

Yeah, get your overweight butt down to www.stewsmith.com and get a training video and program. Wink Big Grin After you implement it, see how fast that time drops.

Congrats on the run time! Now, I challenge you to do sit ups during every commercial you have to sit through watching TV. One of two things will happen, you will cut down on your TV time or you will improve the number of sit ups you can do. It's a win/win situation.

This reminds me of an invention I dreamed up. The "excer-cliner". It's a recliner with features of an excercise machine. In fact I planned to add a feature that makes it "self-propelled". The good part about it was that all the excercise features could be hidden after use and the recliner could stay in front of the TV. Of course it would have a nice drink holder, heat, massage, etc. Hey, it could work? Roll Eyes

LOL - I know it's not the intention (I hope) but after reading these you'd think I was a lazy fat a**. I assure you I am not. I don't really watch enough TV to make that plan effective.

I think I've got a great plan - I play golf 2-3 times a week (walk most of the time) and I stink at it. Everytime I hit a bad hit, I'll do 30 situps. That should do it...LOL

I work hard all day and I'm usually outside in the heat with my Amn...and my unit does PT 5 days a week and our runs are usually 3-4 miles long. I am not a couch potato. I max out my situps every year - I don't know what's happened...but I can't crank them out like I use to. I should have done the s/u before my run...but then I don't think I'd have hit 13:30.

Well, I'll just have to work on them - thanks for the ideas...but the TV surely won't have me doing enough Smile

Good job on the run, dude. I took 2 minutes off my time the second time around as well.

I feel your pain on the run. Never was a good distance runner as most of my running is a short sprint with a heavy load. Hard to pace oneself in a mile and a half when one's typical sprints are much, much shorter with a load equal to body weight.

Just a mile and a half. 13:30 is still slow - I know. But for ME, it's fast as hell. I got kids around me that can run it in 9:XX and run circles around me...but I can't do that - yet Smile

My other run standard is 3 miles in 27 min. Haven't nailed that one yet - but I'm a lot closer than I use to be.

Keep working at it. I ran four miles everyday, while on active duty, and managed to keep a consistent, leisurely 7-minute mile run. I still can do it, but I'm trying to get my mile mark below six minutes. I'm actually in better shape now, than when I was on active duty. That's why I recommend Stew's training videos. He'll show you how to do it safely, and effectively.

Which training video would you recommend Ed? I just looked at the site and saw a lot of stuff.

LOL, you aren't, but I just might fall into that slot. Frown It's obvious from my post that I have put more thought into excerise, than action. Mostly in attempt to avoid it. Big Grin

Yeah, when I first started running the 1.5 mile several months ago, I could only do it in 18 minutes. Eek

Now, I have started entering my base's 5k run and just finished the last one in 21:02!!! Big Grin

I believe I'm closing in on 9 minutes for my mile and a half but I haven't ran one recently.

Congrats on your run time. Did you run before you did your situps? You can use the AF portal and go to the AF fitness link. You can calculate what you need to pass by adding in different run times/pushup's and situps. You can actually find out your actual score is by putting in the numbers your PTL annotated. Good luck on your next PT test.
