I'm looking for anyone who is in this AFSC or has any knowledge of it.

Are you chosen for a particular job/duty in the Space Systems field, or does everyone pretty much do the same thing? If so are you tested to see what you are qualified for?

Any information would greatly help.

Thanks.

There are many different jobs in Space Systems. I had four assignments as a 1C6 and only two were similar. My first was at ground based (radar) missile warning site, the second was satellite command and control, the third was back to ground base missile warning, and the last was as an orbital analyst in Cheyenne Mountain.

In addition to those there is also space based missle warning, numerous other command and control, and other jobs. With this job you will go to school often, probably with every assignment change and then some more with the requirments to go to Space 200 and 300 at certain points in your career.

The assignment process is based on personnel needs, if you pass Space 100 you are qualified for follow on training in any of the space squadrons.

Most 1C6s are in Colorado Springs between Schriever and Peterson. The next biggest group is at Vandenberg, CA and then probably Buckley near Denver.

I just got a class date for this afsc. Can anyone who has recently been through the school get me some info as far as lodging and all that fun stuff is concerned. For instance should I bring a mini fridge? I'm an NCO retrain btw and I know at my previous afsc NCO and Airman tech schools are different experiences.

Mini Fridge?
You'll be in billeting - one of several buildings spread out on Vandi. Most likely, you'll be in the "quads"
You will have a fridge.

Your concern should be "should I bring a car" instead. The "base shuttle" is undependable and almost non-existant.
Your schoolhouse is quite a walk from billeting.

The only tech school difference between you and NPS, is that you won't be marching to school.

Yeah car isn't an issue, that's why I didn't ask shirt. Not knowing what the room situation is like is an issue, that's why I did ask. The only difference between me and an Airman is that I dont have to march to school huh??? I'm pretty sure there are a couple more differences then that. Usefull information would be whether will it be Air Force Inn billeting where I have to pay every week, or dorm style where I don't. Thing's like that would be good to know before getting there with just a piece of paper in my hand that only tells me what building my class is in and nothing else. I don't know if that is the way it's ran at Vandenberg but I have seen that crap happen to guys before.

You will be in billeting, not dorms. Your bill will be reconciled every 2 weeks, just like every other billeting in the AF (they'll charge your GTC every 2 weeks.

No, there really are not many differences between you and NPS. You may not be intermixed with them in the basic course, but in your mission specific class, you will be in class with them, "pretending" to be a crew. Most likely you will be simulating different positions, based on your rank but not necessarily. They'll be the Space Console Operator, you'll be the Crew Chief.
You will have to learn everything they learn, so you'll be sitting in their chair at times (although they probably won't have to learn Crew Chief jobs)

Your billeting will be on one side of the base, class will be on the other. The NPS dorms are by the class buildings. Chow hall (there's only 1 on vandi) is near billeting. NPS students are bussed to chow. (You will not be, I guess that's another difference)

Quads are actually 5 rooms, 4 rooms + what used to be a common area that has been converted to a SNCO/officer room. There are also old dorms that have been converted into billeting rooms. If you stay there, you'll have both dorm suites, with the bathroom in the middle. I've stayed in both. The Quads are very nice(considering) but location is very much out of the way. I had the larger SNCO "common area" room, but some of the other rooms are very small.
You'll have a dorm fridge, coffee pot and microwave

Oh, Vandi has an awesome chow hall! One of the best I've seen in my career. They won the Hennessy a few years ago, and it's a new building. Hopefully it hasn't gone downhill since I was there.
Weekend brunch can't be beat!
