Hi, I'm planning on joining the army with my MOS being 63B. I'm still waiting on my waiver to clear before I can enlist. But it looks like I'll at Ft Jackson throughout the summer for BCT and AIT. My question is for those of you that also went to Ft Jackson as a 63B. Did you enjoy your time in AIT? And once done with AIT where was your next assignment? How much time off do you really got on weekends and what is there to do? I understand that during the week its all work and no play. But I'm curious to know what one can do to relax from the stress the week before. Thanks for any information you can provide.

AIT seems to be changing all the time from what I've heard. I graduated 63B in Sept of 2005. That wasn't that long ago, but things have changed a lot in that time. They get cell phones now. No more Drill Sergeants. Sounds like it would be real easy. The heat and humidty will suck. It sounds like you'll be there the same time frame I was, so I know how bad the weather can be. You can get assigned anywhere and everywhere because every single unit uses some kind of vehicle that needs fixing. I was a lucky one and got sent to an SF Group. Most of us that volunteered for jump school got some really cool units, while everyone else got Korea (bad if you're married), Ft Drum, and other leg units. I don't know if they still do it, but jump school recruiters came to Fort Jackson recruiting AIT students about every 10 weeks. Go for it. After I left 5th Group I came to a transportation unit full of legs with no wings on their chests, not even Air Assault. They think I'm some kind of Rambo for being double stacked, which has worked out great so far since they're making me the new MOtor SGT even though I was near the bottom of the ladder at my last unit.

My son is at Ft. Jackson for 63B. They took their phones from them for supposedly 1 week, well someone messed up so it was 2 weeks before they got them back. My son says it's not that bad there's a lot of classroom work now this coming week they are starting to actually take apart things (think he said a lawn mower but not for sure). They didn't have an off post pass yet however, they do have on post time off. He's been there since April 4th, however, said AIT just started the 14th of April and he is suppose to graduate around June 24th. Hope this helps. (Your probably already in your AIT or BCT now anyway I'm sure.

Good luck!

I know this post is very old but maybe you are still around. I'm a DEPer I'm going to be a 91B wheeled vehicle mechanic. Do you need a security clearance to go to airborne school? I noticed you said you got sent to SF group do you need a security clearance for that? The reason why I ask is because I don't qualify for a clearance because of my bad credit history.

no, you don't need a security clearance for jump school.
