Anyone know where the Ospreys will be stationed at besides NM and NC?

How many squadrons did the AF finally settle on as the magic number?

I finish my initial FE training in june and was trying to see what's around. I have heard in here that they only take prior 22 guys but there are always ways around sei's.

They have a squadron here at Hurlburt right now. I think Cannon will be one soon as well. The AF isn't going to be putting any in NC as far as I know.

My bad on NC, that is where they have the marine ones right? I thought they did training there too.

Didn't know about herby tho, thought they moved them to afsoc west. I saw an af news story saying that they have already started arriving a few weeks ago there. Know anyone that actually enjoys the area there?

I know of MANY who think that they should move the Artillery Center from Fort Sill, OK to Clovis, NM...as they'd love to see someone blow that place off the map.

I only have hearsay on that, as I've been there but once, and didn't get the 'feel' of the place.

I do know of one former F-16 crewchief that would likely hang himself via rusty safetywire if he ever got orders back to Clovis...

...yeah, North Carolina boy at Medina...I'm talking about you. Violin

As of now from what I've heard through the grapevine is that the only way to get on a '22 is be a prior experienced FE or be a current crew chief on them with a waiver. The way the FE assignments are currently going are pretty much the needs of the AF unless you have some higher ups on your side.

Replies to date are right...lovely Clovis NM, Hurlburt Fld and Kirtland are the CV-22 CONUS bases, with two OCONUS (PACOM/EUCOM) to be named later.

I think there would be some instructor postions at the school house at MCAS New River as well, but can't spend a career there (and who'd want to?)

The only instructor position at New River are for pilots. All FE training occurs at Kirtland.

I read somewhere that initial mission capability is slotted for 2009. Wonder if this means one full up unit or what.

Overseas, I'd bet on one okinawa and one UK. Be interesting also to see how they decide to settle the gun issues.

IOC for the first CV unit (8th SOS) is slated for late 08/early 09.

Kadena is a good bet for SOCPAC...SOCEUR on the other hand is up in the air. The UK is definitely out. My bet would be somewhere is the Med Rim.

From a while back...

First-ever military freefall jump from the CV-22 Osprey at Hurlburt Field by the 720th. Last two to jump were combat weathermen.

I'm not certain of the accuracy of this claim. In 1989 the Air Force had OT&E for this new technology (23rd AF/SMOTEC at Hurlburt Field). I don't recall when the first jump out of the V-22 happened but I recall or seem to recall something about a freefall jump done by Air Force jumpers in the 1990s.

Regardless, First AF freefall from AFSOC CV-22

Your youtube video is the same video as the one I posted. In any case, the 1st SOW PA guy is the one who wrote the article saying what I posted. Maybe what your thinking of in the 90's wasn't technically an AFSOC "C"v-22 asset just yet.

One just flew into Little Rock today...we had to go down and take us a look-see. There was a Chinook on the ramp, and everyone in class thought it was the Chinook taking off, but I knew that was no Chinook.

I still say it's 100,000 moving parts all trying to kill you at the same time, and I am NOT sold on it yet (I did say YET, right?).

But it's a DAMNED good looking machine...obviously gonna be a mean motor scooter.

It'll be a while before all the non-53 dudes get a crack at it. Don't despair, though. There will be slots coming soon (09).

When I was stationed at Kirtland they opened it up to any instructor there. The DO of the 8th SOS is actually a Talon 2 pilot. None of the fixed wing guys I worked with showed interest.

When that thing is thrashing through the air it looks like a 100 yard dash contestant in the special olympics.

Currently/for a while, it has been open to ANY FE from ANY airframe.

We will get the last of our 53 guys this coming PFT load...

Actually...the current DO is a former 53/60 driver and the former DO (now CC) is a former 60 driver...both of them are former army guys.

You might be thinking of the former CC...he was a T2 pilot.

As for interest...we are getting a good mix of pilots(T1,T2, Shadows). However, most are still
former helo guys. An interesting note though is that we haven't seen any HH-60 pilots come through since our initial cadre ones...?
