I also posted this question to Aerospace and defense. I didn't realize that there was a forum for people interested in flying at the time. here goes...
My daughter is 17 yrs old, a 'B'-average student, and has wanted to be a fighter pilot since she was in 3rd grade. the desire has never faultered or changed. She has A.D.H.D., which is controled with Focalin. She shows no outward signs of hyperactivity (her brain just goes 150mph). She is well rounded in her abilities ie;theater arts and math, sciences. I was just told by a family member that she would not qualify for flight school because of her "learning disorder". I am very proud of my child for wanting to serve her country, but while we are looking for good colleges that could help fullfill her dreams, I need to know some solid truths before she makes her discisions. Please help. Thank you. |

My 11 year old is also on Focalin, and has been for quite some time.
I asked this question when I was leaving the Army and getting my flight physical for the Air Force last year, somewhat curious if he would ever be able to follow in my footsteps (if he outgrew his issues). The answer I got from the flight doc was that kids who have a history of being medicated for these disorders have to be looked at on an individual basis, and that it very well can become a disqualifying factor, requiring a waiver to allow them in (waivers are decided on an individual basis, and have their own specific criteria for relevance/acceptance) The tone of his answer was pretty much telling me "it's a disqualifyer", without him saying so directly. The non-verbal cues were pretty clear. My question was put in the context of "if my kid were to come off the medicine now, would it still bar his entry". My boy is 11. Your daughter is currently taking the meds, so I'd venture to say that it isn't likely she'd be accepted. That being said, I'm not a doctor...waivers are granted for ALL kinds of stuff every day...and there is such a preponderance of kids that are being medicated with these type drugs in this current crop of rug-rats that the issue may be re-examined soon. Best bet is to ask a local recruiter, and be specific. They may have more info. Someone on these forums will likely chime in after me with more relevant info, too. Good luck... And always remember that the Army issues more waivers for helicopter pilots than do the services with the jets. If she thinks that jet fighters are the only cool platforms to fly...do a YouTube search on what the Apache gunship can do. Mean machines...for sure. |
