My 19 yo LCpl son has made a mess of his finances. He has spent and charged above his means.(big pickup, laptop, tools,GPS system, eating out) My dh and I have been helping him out the last two months. (he was put on half pay) It is really draining us. We love him dearly but do not know if we are really helping by covering for him. He does have a punishment date the end of September and is sure he will spend time in the brig. He says if he lets his expensive vehicle go back to bank he will get discharged. I do not personally believe bankruptcy is right but.... we cannot continue to help him out. From what I can see online there is no pay while in the brig. Any advise would be more than welcome!

hard as it is.. leave him hanging. HE screwed up, he needs to face the consequences. ALL of them.

Exactly, he's the one responsible for his actions, not you. If you attempt to bail him out his problems this time, he'll depend on you to continue to do so the next time he gets jammed up. Let him face the music. |

Whew, this is going to be tough, but most likely easier than constantly worrying about draining our money to cover for him! Its hard because we love him and don't want him to get kicked out of the USMC,not sure what on earth he would do then. Thanks for the advise,I know its the right.

I sort of agree with others you just need to let him figure it out on his own, I have had this happen to me, not to that extent, but I am paying my debt off, and I feel better and better every month.

Has he talked to his Gunny about this? That is the first place to start for him because you cannot continue to pick up the mess he created as hard as it is. He is the one that did it so now he has to take responsibility for his actions. Sometimes a plan can be worked out that saves his butt and in the end the lesson is learned far better than any other way.
He should also look into taking the classes concerning money provided through the military. They have them on buying a vehicle, buying a house, balancing a check book, etc... Go to Military One Source as they might have a financial plan that can help him as well. He needs to talk to his creditors, banks... and work out an agreement. If it means trading his in vehicle and going with a piece of junk then that is what he has to do. |

It's young age so they won't have responsiblity. You can teach him so that he will understand.
