I've been working out now for 26 year's.I started with the usual pyramid style rep's and set's;i.e.Bench 1x12 1x10 1x8 etc..I would work out everyday, every other day whatever it took.I got relatively decent gains throughout the year's trying to pack on muscle was not easy for a 6'2" twig like me.Starting weight-150lbs.I never tried steroid's although I came close to using them in the 80's when I was stationed with the Marines.I have to say for those who find themselves in my previous predicament, make sure that you work the basic's,Squat 3warm-ups and 2work sets of 10 supersetted with db pullover's 2x20,Military press 1warm-up 2 worksets of 8,Bench press 2 warm-ups 2 work sets of 8,Reverse grip pulldown's 1 warmup 2 worksets of 8,and an exercise called "High pull's"2 warmups 2work sets of 5,also crunches 2x25 with weight if too easy. These are done only 2 a week.I can't take credit for this schedule I got it out of one of my powerlifting mag's.I have only been on this routine for 3 month's and have increased weight in all lift's for a total combined increase of 210 lbs!I wish I new of this style work out 20 year's ago!Oh well right?! Anyway give it a try if you've tried everything else.I think you'll find it will work pretty fast.
GOD bless

Those who have not "worked out" with weight's,should be very careful. There is a "general statement" that is said to those starting a new i.e.,diet,health routine,...you should first consult your physician.
I wholeheartedly recommend that you do "something",no matter your age,you will benefit from regimen of walking, swimming, tennis, squash. Something that is enjoyable!
GOD bless

Hey do you have any advice on gaining weight (for women??)! Confused I have a hard time gaining weight and right now, I am drinking this weight gainer stuff by Body Tech. Do you have any suggestions to what must I do in order to gain weight and healthy muscle? I am currently 118 pds and it took a while for it to stay that way without me losing it. Roll Eyes

I would suggest that you be careful with gaining.Do it slowly, maybe double portions, please stay away from steroids! When I was trying to gain I ate everything that wasn't nailed down.Trim back the aerobics, increase the amount of weight you use for lift's,stick with power type lift's;Squats 2x10 superset with dumbbell pullover's 2x20,High pulls 2x5,Military press 2x8,Bench press(shoulder width grip)2x8,Reverse grip pulldown's(shoulder width grip)2x8 Crunches 2x25 This work out should be done twice a week.Do warm up before each exercise, concentrate on your form,if you don't know how to do a certain lift ask someone reliable to show you how.You can hurt yourself if your doing something wrong. This work out has been a GOD send for me, because it's intense and quick! The weight you choose for each lift should be heavy enough for you to just get the first set in and the second set you may miss by 1-2 reps, that's ok you'll get it next workout!Good luck and keep us posted!
GOD bless

ok, i don't have a clue to what you just said about the different types of lifts! Can you possibly break it down for me? Confused As far as me excercising, I try to go to the YMCA at least 2 or 3 times a week and I do leg press, chest press, abduction and adduction leg presses. I also run on the treadmill for about 10 minutes and I do stretches and 30 situps afterwards. Big Grin I really want to gain weight. My hubby will be home soon and I want him to see a difference in me. Pray for me and I thank God for you for taking the time to help me with this. God Bless you!!

Sorry about that GodsChild. From what you posted it sounds like your in great shape. What I would suggest is cutting back on the running. The types of lifts that you would want to do are called "multijoint" exercises, like the Squat for example, this exercise is the absolute best for building overall body strength and mass.Concentrate on your breathing, take a deep breath before you begin the "down" portion of the rep,the weighted bar is resting across the top of your shoulder's and you move down in a sitting like move, then stand up.The work out that you are doing is fine otherwise.I will pray for you and your husband.GOD bless the both of you.

Hey there mrsd! bounce a quarter! You kill me! Squats are good, and leg lift's except with these your on your stomach and raise your foot to "the ceiling". That last part is a mental picture to help do them.Walking is also good.
My cardio is ok,I haven't been for awhile though,I know I'm bad. You take it easy and keep practicing with that quarter. Wink

Update:started hitting the heavy bag again, and trying to practice a martial art.I'm not thinking I'm the next Bruce Lee by any stretch of the imagination, just trying to do something different.Plus I've been feeling abit tight and I should loosen up.So far so good still with the weight's I've had to back off a bit from 325 squat to 275X10 reps 2 sets.I tried 350 for the first time on the bench press,I didn't get it,but atleast it was a "controlled" descent.LOL.So I'm probably still at 330 or so.Well all you "metal heads" take care,be smart, and watch your six! GOD bless

Well fellow "metal heads" I really did it this time.I may have a herniated disc, around the lower back.I wasn't ready for the lift and felt it "pop".I go for an MRI on friday.Hopefully it's just a strain and nothing serious.I serve as an example of how not to lift.Make sure your abs are tight and you are concentrating on the lift.Good luck and GOD bless

Oh wow, that sounds painful. I don't even think I lift enough to hurt myself. I don't do free weights anyway, I'm a wuss.

Still can't "bounce" a quarter but it looks better than it has in about 8 years, definetly has changed shape. Big Grin Japan, here I come!!!

There ya go mrsd! Good for you! I'll be ok,the doc say's I'll never be able to play the piano again.I never knew how! I can't do that joke as well as Groucho. But atleast I still have a sense of humor.I figure I'll be away from "serious" lifting for 2-3month's.That's if there's no major damage, keep your finger's crossed! Have fun in Japan! Enjoy!

I can hardly wait! But I will take it slow, no more powerlifting,I can't afford the layoff from work! Take care of yourselves! GOD bless
