I had read somewhere Confused
that the current policy of the mandatory retirement, affecting warrants over 30, that it may go away, in leiu of the new 40 year payscale. Thus allowing those who wish do go further may do so, eliminating the need to request a retirement extension board.

I am just curious if anyone else had heard on status of this pending "possible" policy change, and whether it is still on the table?
Thanks.............

I don't think you will see many get to that 40 year mark... and I don't believe they will allow most to remain past 30.

I did recently attend a retirement of a good friend of mine who was one of the luck few to make it to 40.... He went to OCS as a BMC... retired as an 0-6. Way to go Mike... Big Grin

Right now it depends on your specialty, some they need and will allow service past 30 like Nav Eng and some, I guess, they have enough of like Pers warrants who are out at 30. the message comes out every year outlining the process. I am not sure I can make 30 much less want to stick around longer ! I keep remembering the old Master Chiefs 40 + years of service they retire and are dead within a month. 22 years down 8 ? to go !

I've known several that have died within 10 years of retirement... There is life after the CG.. and 30 is plenty to do... All the money in the world won't help if you are not alive to spend it....

As with everything else... those staying past 30 will depend on Needs of the Service

Chap;
NDA 2007 made a significant change in the law. The change affected the date that 30 years starts from. It used to be 30 years OF SERVICE, the change made it 30 years of COMMISIONED SERVICE. Now, these are not ENTITLEMENTS of a member - these are AUTHORIZATIONS for the service to choose to use or not to use. So - from a service perspective, the 30 year or 40 year thing is not the point of discussion here.

As a side note, I am hearing a lot more about the 30/40 thing. For enlisted persons, the law NEVER required retirement at 30. The only reference to 30 years was when the % increase stopped. The NDA did not change anything on that side except that when a service CHOOSE to allow service past 30, the member would recieve a higher pay %.

Mighty,

Thanks for the info. I think Wray may be right, 30 years is enough, regardless. It is time to go hunting or fishing or whatever and do it right in the middle of the workweek. That will be a nice luxury. Cheers..... Beer

30 years is a lot of time to put in. Some of you are right about certain CWOs being allowed to stay in because of their ratings. I asked for a 12 month extension beyone 30 to finish off a tour at my last station, HQ granted a 36 month extension because of my speciality (Surfman), then cut me orders to an ATON job in the Bay Area. I left at my Change of Command three weeks short of 31 years. The CG is a Great Organization but maybe the changes I've seen since '75 or my patience was getting shorter, well it was time to leave with no regrets.

As with the authorization of CWO5, the CG is probably not going to allow us to benefit from this. A provision of the 2007 NDA Act changed mandatory retirement of CWOs to 30 years of Warrant Officer service vice previous mandatory retirement at 30 years of total service. The CG legal folks are evaluating whether this is a mandatory change or not. In other words, if it's not mandatory, we wont be doing it. Is this a surprise?

again - I would counter that idea that there was mandatory retirement at 30 - read the post above. Service past 20 should be thought of as a privelage, much more than a right. Heck, even service to 20! Can anyone really blame the service for making that bussiness decision? Same thing for MCPOs - no legal reason to cap service - just a business decision.

Mighty,

Thought it over a bit. Just can't sink my teeth in and go along with the twenty/thirty years is a privilage stuff. However, nor is it a right either. It's neither. If you get out after 20, is that not just basically, "Retire Light" vs "Retire"?
You know, Bud Light vs Bud?..lol Big Grin
Either way, time sure flys by doesn't it?
