Its that time again, what marks factors are considered favorable as to last years averages?

When does it come out? Oops, it is out, thanks.
I just read that your EER from the last 4yrs counts for 60% of the Preboard Score. Is there a place where we can see last years stats? This message has been edited. Last edited by: smirfy, |

Well the Primary and Alternate Preboard score cutoffs are published. I bet your Profile letter, that comes out in early Feb, will have what you are looking for.
I'm sure you will be fine in this round, since you've been in since Regan. I have time working against me. They need to bring back the test. |

Smirfy,
Time is really a non factor...it's all about the marks in this phase of the game...the further you distance yourself from the average marks...the bigger your share of the points get...(some people get negative scores if they're below the average) I'm in the same boat as you as far as time in yet I've made the last two primary cuts easily due to my marks so I wouldn't worry too much about lack of TIG. I have also seen a trend of the primary and secondary thresholds dropping the last few years for ELC...Good luck! Strat sends... |

Strat,
I thought it strange that the threshold for ELC is much lower than the other rates; especially comparing the usual SWE Final Multiple. It might have something to do with how fast ETs advance. I'm a little worried about how my Marks will compare with others competing. It's the cream of the crop at this point right? Do you know what the Avg was last year? Steph |

No worries, I'll be that old one day too.
At least if your Marks are not way above avg, you'll have plenty of TIG points. And that counts for 40%. Good Luck. |

Smirfy,

Hey Paul, How's it going? Looks like your doing really well, looking at your marks. I'm no where near looking as good as you in that dept, but then again I don't write my own and I usually tick off at least one person at every unit.
TIG for E-6/5yrs E-7/7months: 72 Final Multiple: 42.7455 Good Luck. Steph |

I've been good. Just finished first semester in ACET. From what I have heard it really matters about how well your OER and Resume reads. How bout you?

Congrats on ACET, and you are making Chief soon I hear. I don't know if you remember Brian Moller, but he just made ETC as well. We're probably the 1st ones from our class.
Well, the Board doesn't even look at your PDR unless your Primary. Did you compete last year? If so, do you know what the avg on Marks were? I'm sure you have nothing to worry this round, since your Marks are stellar. |

Show Off Sorry about hijacking the MSSE thread. What does that stand for anyways? Paul, like Strat was saying before, Marks weigh heavier than Experience. You would be surprised how many of us competing for ELC have the about the same in experience points. It's too bad they don't give points out for personality; I would definitely beat you guys out then. |

THE MARINE SAFETY SPECIALIST ENGINEERING (MSSE) SPECIALTY IS COMPOSED OF MEMBERS FROM THE FOLLOWING ENLISTED ENGINEERING RATINGS: DC, EM, AND MK. THE TECHNICAL/MECHANICAL EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING PLUS THE SHIPBOARD EXPERIENCE THAT ENLISTED ENGINEERS BRING FROM OTHER PROGRAM AREAS IS HIGHLY CRITICAL TO THE SUCCESS OF THE MARINE SAFETY PROGRAM. WITH THE EVER-INCREASING COMPLEXITY OF MERCHANT VESSELS, MSSES ARE CALLED UPON TO BE THE SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS FOR ENGINEERING SYSTEMS. THEY PROVIDE THE CORE TECHNICAL EXPERTISE FOR MARINE SAFETY AND THE ENGINEERING MENTORSHIP FOR OTHER NON-TECHNICAL MEMBERS IN THE PROGRAM. MSSES BUILD ON THEIR ENLISTED TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE BY RECEIVING AN ABUNDANCE OF TRAINING (BOTH CLASS ROOM AND OJT) TO PREPARE THEM FOR THIS HIGHLY TECHNICAL SPECIALTY. PRIOR ENLISTED EXPERIENCE IN THE MARINE SAFETY PROGRAM IS NOT A PREREQUISITE FOR SELECTION TO MSSE. THERE IS NO COLOR PERCEPTION REQUIREMENT FOR THIS SPECIALTY. MSSES SERVING IN THE MARINE SAFETY FIELD ARE ENGINEERING SPECIALISTS WHOSE PRIMARY FOCUS IS COMMERCIAL VESSEL INSPECTIONS/EXAMINATIONS (MARINE INSPECTOR) AND CASUALTY INVESTIGATIONS (INVESTIGATING OFFICER). THIS FOCUS RELIES HEAVILY ON ENGINEERING/TECHNICAL BACKGROUNDS FOR THE INSPECTION AND CASUALTY INVESTIGATION OF MAIN PROPULSION EQUIPMENT (GASOLINE, DIESEL, BOILER, AND GAS TURBINE) AND AUXILIARY MACHINERY (SHIPS SERVICE AND EMERGENCY GENERATORS, STEERING GEAR, EVAPORATORS, AIR COMPRESSORS AND RECEIVERS, BILGE SYSTEMS, FIRE ALARMS AND SMOKE DETECTION SYSTEMS, FUEL OIL HANDLING SYSTEM, CARGO TRANSFER SYSTEMS, OILY WATER SEPARATORS, ALL VESSEL ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS, LIFE BOAT LAUNCHING EQUIPMENT, ETC.). MSSES REVIEW VESSEL CONSTRUCTION PLANS TO ENSURE NEW VESSEL CONSTRUCTION AND EXISTING VESSEL REPAIRS ARE COMPLETED IN ACCORDANCE WITH APPROVED PLANS, APPLICABLE REGULATIONS, AND ACCEPTED INDUSTRY STANDARDS. MSSES CONDUCT EXAMINATIONS OF VESSELS IN DRY DOCK TO INSPECT WELDING REPAIRS, WOOD AND FIBERGLASS BOAT REPAIRS, RUDDER ASSEMBLIES, PROPELLER AND TAIL SHAFT EXAMINATIONS, BOW/STERN THRUSTERS, SEA CHESTS, SEA VALVES, ETC. MSSES ALSO INSPECT THE FOLLOWING: LIFESAVING EQUIPMENT, FIREFIGHTING EQUIPMENT, BRIDGE AND NAVIGATIONAL EQUIPMENT, ANCHOR WINDLASSES AND OTHER GROUND TACKLE, HABITABILITY, WATERTIGHT INTEGRITY, STRUCTURAL FIRE PROTECTION, ETC. THEY PERFORM REGULATORY OVERSIGHT OF COMPLEX FEDERAL LAWS, REGULATIONS, AND TREATIES. THESE ACTIVITIES ARE PERFORMED ON DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN SMALL PASSENGER VESSELS, DEEP DRAFT FREIGHT/TANK VESSELS, MOBILE OFFSHORE DRILLING UNITS, OFFSHORE SUPPLY VESSELS, AND OIL AND CHEMICAL/GAS BARGES. IN THE PERFORMANCE OF THESE DUTIES THEY INTERFACE WITH A BROAD ARRAY OF PRIVATE AND PUBLIC (LOCAL/STATE/FEDERAL/INTERNATIONAL) MEMBERS AT ALL LEVELS OF THE MARINE INDUSTRY. |

Marks: anything over 44 is very good, 42-44 is good.
