Same hear... Applause

Now lets talk about this W5 thing. Can anyone tell me why W5 cant be treated the same as W4 is now. Why are we going to the pyramid promotion system with this final paygrade?

chapwood........ Cool

Here's the explanation I have received.
All current CWO billets are W-4.
To go to W-5 the billets must be evaluated and divided into a minimum of W-2/W-3 and W-4/W-5 jobs. There is a possibility there could be several W-5 only billets.
In order to have W-5 by law we could not have more than 10% as W5(I'm guessing on this percentage) but every specialty would have to have the opportunity for W5.
Maybe one of the PERS Types can elaborate more.

Not to sound redundant, but why not just make all billets W5?

I personally don't like the idea of W-5 billets. Beyond personal reasons, nobody has provided a valid reason to have W-5 billets. I like the idea that all billets are at the W-4 level, and I like the option that I can apply for any W-4 job within my specialty.

My .02 cents for what it's worth...

A little strange that there is still interest from folks in taking the appointment.

I've gathered the impression over the last couple of years, from the postings of many in the e-7 thru e-9 paygrades, that they'd rather have a sister gainfully employed in a cat house, than take an appointment and lose their "mess".

The appointment, then commission, is something none of them would want to subject themselves to. Must be the money Roll Eyes that keeps the list going every year. Wink

Speaking just for myself it wasn't so much the money as the billets for GMCS versus CWO (WEPS). At the time I accepted my appointment I had 19 WEPS Billets versus 8 Senior Chief and only 5 Master Chief. There was also at that time the ability to go into the MSS field which gave you billets all over the place.

I disagree. I was an E-8 with 19 years of service and was number 3 on the E-9 list. I took the appointment and commission to W-2 for the billets, not the money. I am still getting paid as an E-8 with all of my E-8 entitlements using the "saved pay" system. I wont actually get a pay raise until I make W-3 two more years from now. What ticks me off more than anything else is the "perception" from the Chief's Mess. I was approached by an E-7 that wanted words of wisdom from me. He didnt give me the whole "May I have the honor of introducing my humble self...blah,blah, blah" because his Mess told him that I wasnt a real Chief and that I had gone over to the "dark side". I had to tell him that I had spent over 6 years as a member of "the Mess" and that I had been a member of a Chiefs Mess (Harriet Lane & Morgenthau) for the last several years. I participated and actually organzied many CCTI's. I initiated most of my friends!! How can that type of history be erased by someone who just put on an anchor and said that I drifted over to the dark side? I supported many Chief's Messes and several different chapters. Its a shame that "some" Chief's messes still dont get it. I just tell them that I strived and I will continue to strive to keep the traditions alive in the Chiefs Mess. Even from the "dark side". Its just a shame the way that some of these younger E-7's think. Confused

Randy, We had a similar discussion on this topic a couple of months ago.

Some things I don't think will ever change even after the MCPOCG let them all know that those of use who now wear Eagles instead of Anchors are still to be considered "Chiefs".

Though I've worn the finish off and it's now dull and hard to read, I carry my Chief's Challenge coin from my CCTI in my pocket at work every day. I showed it to some PCPO's that visited me recently and reminded them to remember their roots.

BM's go BOSN.

GM's go WEPS.

MSS's now have to decide: MSSE or MSSD.

'nuff said.

My fellow Chief - may I suggest that the problem lies with both your shipmates in the mess as well as your shipmates in the wardroom. I have run across places where the CWOs 'idea' of being a "Chief" is that they can use the mess for lunch went it is convenient for them. I have seen a CWO ask me "who the hell I thought I was" when I adressed him by first name, at lunch, in the Chiefs Mess. We had served together afloat as PO1s. (Very interesting conversation after that!). Once a Chief, Always a Chief is what we preach and is what we should live by. That takes efforts on both sides. I have no issue booting ANY Chief, no matter their paygrade from the "mess" when they choose not to act like a Chief. When we are in the mess, there are no paygrades, only Chiefs.

Thanks for staying a Chief, shipmate!
