Buddy of mine projected the duty stations for infantry finishing up OSUT in the next couple of months, and it looks like Fort Drum (10th Mountain) has pages of slots available for both 11b and 11c...

I guess there retention rate sucks up there....

give me some feedback fellas

It's New York State, where have you been living the last 20 years?

Here is a little preview for you:

1. Civilians sticking their fingers into the salad bar during flu season and "sampling" without payin for sh*t.

2. Nobody holding the door open for your wife but instead watching it slam in her face.

3. Washing your hands in the restroom but noticing the guys that were standing on either side of you at the urinal just left the latrine without washing their hands. Ehhhh, reread #1 again above.

4. The guy behind you in traffic leaning on the horn as soon as the traffic light flips to green.

5. Idiots driving way too fast for conditions in SUV's during whiteout conditions.

I'm sure someone can continue the list in regards to life on or around post. Thought I would cover some of the life in New York State for ya though....been there a few times on business....each time I ended up losing money on my expense report submission because prices in New York rise faster then most companies can adjust for......usually the taxes going up. Mad_Matt is probably the guy to ask about 10th Mountain. I have no clue on 10th Mountain or Ft. Drum myself to tell you the truth been out close to 20 years. Just like to rant on New York State. Cool

I don't think you can draw a conclusion this has anything to do with retention rate though. Very rare way back when I was in for things to get that bad before an intervention takes place.

You might get lucky and go to the 4th Brigade. It's in Louisiana.

I can't find a video link at this time, but one of the local stations ran a report on Soldiers parking the Bradleys at Ft. Stewart and hiking the Appalachin Trail in teams getting ready for future deployments without tracks.

The point of the story was that they needed to learn to hump hills and Ft. Stewart was flat.
And if you ever saw a topo map of Stewart you would know there are no hills.

The men were 3rd Infantry Division.

So 10th, 82nd, 101st and 173rd may get a longer break in the future.

Judge, what they are doing is taking 1 or 2 current mech brigades from the traditionally mech divisions and converting them to light infantry brigades.

Thats a good thing Top.
I loved the set-up we had in the 197th Infantry Brigade we we were released from total school support in 1973.
To be combat ready, more units were added.
We had a Light Infantry Battalion 3-7th and a Mech 1-58th.
3-7th even had one Company that was Airborne.

With the way BCTs are set up now, maybe it is best if the whole Brigade is one way.

I know when we were doing Brigade work in the boonies the 58th Mech and the 69th Armor teamed up. Every Company would swap a Platoon.
So the Armor Company had 2 Tank Platoon and 1 Infantry and the Infantry Companys had 1 Tank and 2 Infantry Platoons.

I think picking the Appalachin Trail is a great idea for preparing to be light.
Thing is, in the video, they were not carrying full packs.

When gruntpain1775 first became a Mod and PCS'd there from his other unit they were starting to turn in the Bradleys or get ready for turn-in. He was part of it, thats one reason why he had time to Mod and didn't go to the field. He's not part of the train-up though and should either be on or close to his ETS date.

About the time the conversion started the rumors in Hot Topics on this website started up that they were training 3rd ID as a secret QRF for the United States and the associated conspiracy rumors from that this spawned (this part was actually funny so I thought I would throw it in here). Cool

I know I'm a bit late to the topic but in all honesty Ft. Drum really isnt that bad. I'm in the triple deuce and in all honesty while the conditions for the most part suck up here, along with a majority of the locals, our units are pretty good, the facilities are nice and the training and ops tempo are something to be appreciated. Say what you will about it but I enjoy being up here and honestly don't care if I spend the rest of my career with the 10th and the 2-22.

Ft. Drum is not a bad post; it's actually pretty nice. It's the cold weather that sucks. Snow is measured in FEET, not inches. So if it were possible to uproot and relocate Ft. Drum to the South, I'd stay here forever. Especially now since everything has been expanded, upgraded, and housing is going up all over the place. But the cold weather is a deal-breaker for many.

I cannot speak about any of the other units/brigades on Drum, but the Aviation Brigade leaves lots to be desired. I'll just say that the command climate is not all that it should/could be. That has led lots of Aviation Soldiers to either not re-enlist or do whatever was necessary to get assigned somewhere/anywhere else.

I am proud of my deployment to Iraq with the Division, and my time here, but I am anxious to leave here both to do other things and to get out of the cold weather.

Ft. Drum sounds a lot like Wildflecken, West Germany. I loved it there except for the four feet of snow & not seeing the sun until mid-March. Eek
