Hey, i am joining the army as an infantry soldier and i was wondering where i can be stationed after basic. I wanted to go to italy after and i wasnt sure if i had to go to any base, or if i could just be stationed at a main infantry base? i was looking at some bases in the us, and i looked into one and it said it was a communications base.. i didnt know if i could still get stationed there? please help! and thank you!
The basic breakdown. You will get to fill out your "wish list" while at OSUT, this list contains three domestic posts you want and two foreign posts. You are not guaranteed any of these posts and are unlikely to get any of them, if you do it is only because they have a need at the Infantry position at that particular post. As far as going to any base, no you more than likely will not get stationed somewhere that does not have an infantry unit. The way it was explained to me is that if a post has one or two spots for an infantryman, it is generally reserved for a higher rank than what you will be. I don't know if you're aware of the base listing on this website, but it has all of the domestic posts listed and lists the "major units" of each post.
Unless you have it in your enlistment contract yo uwill be assigned per the needs of the Army to an infantry command. Infantry units are found in most all the major combat arms units. The "onesie, twosie" of infantry types at odd, non combat assignments are rare and usually senior NCO billets. PACCOM needs senior infantry NCO advisors, not junior PFC infantry advisors.
If you have Europe in your contract, or you get lucky, you may be assigned to Italy. Unlikely unless you are airborne (because of the unit).
I don't know which base you are calling a "communications base" but it sounds like there are no combat arms there. That means no 11B slots.

OP: There are also a few threads asking this question already in this forum.
Here is one of them.
