I was in 3rd Brigade, HHC and A CO 2/35 IN (Cacti Blue) from '98 to '02. Had a great time in Aloha land. It's the land of 80-85 degrees year round, so do lots of hot weather PT to accimatize yourself. Also, you may not realize this, but there are lots of steep gulches and valleys over there. One particularly notorious run will take you up to the top of Koli-Koli Pass. This is an 8 mile run with the first 4 of it going up a 7-8% grade. It WILL kick your butt. Best to start running all of the hills you can find now.
3rd Brigade is light and 2nd Brigade is Stryker. So its pretty much luck of the draw as to where the reppo-deppo needs you at. Learn how to swim if you don't know now. One of the things that they were big on was "drown-proofing". The stronger the swimmer you are the better off you will be.
Off time is what you make of it. It can be pricey, but for the most part if you stay away from Waikiki and down-town Honolulu you can live rather comfortably. The beaches are the best in the world. My personal favorites were on the North Shore at Sunset, Waimea, and Hale'eva. There is a great flea market at the Aloha Staduim every Wednesday and Saturday. If you want the best Beach Ts, Aloha Shirts, or for the missus, Aloha Dresses, this is the place to go. Don't be an uptight mainlander, get into the Aloha spirit. Surf, boogie-board (my favorite type of fun), or learn to SCUBA for dirt cheap. DON'T try to do everything at once. Relax and take your time, there's plenty to see and do. You lucked out and you're gonna have a great time.
just left the ALOHA state. was a wolfhound. not a bad place. I was there for 8 years. way to long to be on a island. it gets old after awhile. kolekole and the red dirt sucks! try to get to the 1st BN wolfhounds. good unit

Just wondering, what company were you with in 1-27?
I was in 1st plt. C Co, 1986 and 1987. I lived up stairs, the first door on the right, first room on the right, just before the platoon CP.( my memory can be a bit sketchy though ).
back in the day when 1st BN was in the quads huh? We moved into new barracks across from he firestation. And the Firestation hass moved now to, up by A quad. So I guess the BN is across from the old firestation. lol. 2nd BN still lives in the quads
I'm with 2nd BDE. I have been stationed at Schofield Barracks and Fort Bragg. Two completely different worlds. Schofield you have alot of off time. Training area is limited. People either like the island life or hate it. It is up to you what you make off it. The plus side about Hawaii is BAH and COLA rates are high. Which means if you get two or three roommates you can bank $$$.
you'll like it for about a year, once you've seen everything and done everything, you will get board. There's a saying there...If it aint raining, we aint training...get used to that and the Kahuku's WILL kick your ***.
