Weather can mess you up bigtime with night nav.
Hope for a clear sky and know how to find polarius. |

You might want to consider the teamwork concept and collaborate with those you are actually working with.
Standing alone won't get you too far. |

snykypyt is very right.
Night nav is at least a two person gig. If you ever have to do it alone, you will needs lots of time which you don't have. I don't know how it is done now-a-days with night vision goggles and GPS. But with cat eyes and a good illumination glow on a lensatic compass it is not to hard. You need a god glow on the compass and tape. One way to do this is to shine white light from you flash light on them under a poncho. Do not, repeat "do not" look at the white light. You will have to take the red lens off by feel. Set your azimuth on the compass bevel. Soldier 1 walks the line, keeping pace until halted by compass man when tape gets too small and told to side step right or left. You can't get to far ahead due to noise discipline. Compass man goes to Soldier 1 also keeping a pace count. This can take a little extra time, but once you get the hang of it, it can go fast. Like I stated earlier, I don't know if the modern Army uses illum tape, lensatic compasses or crook necked flashlights anymore. |

STill use all of the above, save cat-eyes. I haven't seen too many of those since the ACU came out.
Get good on your own. I never officially used help, though I did look to see where everyone else was going. If I was lost and couldn't find a point I was supposed to be near to, I'd wait 5 minutes (and smoke under a poncho) until some other Joe walked up and found it for me. Plot your points BEFORE you head out. Start the furthest away and work your way back. If you can, make it so you follow perimiter roads or something equally visible. Work smarter, not harder. Kids in the back seat cause accidents; Accidents in the back seat cause kids. |

Off topic comment. I didn't smoke. When we had a Squad Leaders meeting under the poncho, the others would light up. It was awful sometimes trying to breathe. Or some butt hole would light up with out warning killing night vision. |

Dead reckoning means you don't use a compass.

When I did an EIB land-nav course about 3 years ago, we didn't have a dead reconing course. Both day and night were with a compass.
That's not to say I didn't use it. But we did have the compass there if we wanted it. Kids in the back seat cause accidents; Accidents in the back seat cause kids. |
