Is the YN's role different at a PSU unit vs non-PSU unit? Since PSU's appear most likely to deploy overseas do YN's go with or stay behind and work more with orders, pay issues, family questions/concerns etc. Or are YN's at PSU's also trained in combat and prepared to be effective contributors during war/peace keeping missions? I ask because the YN rating looks like what I would get if I join and the unit near me is a PSU. Thanks for any info.

PSU's now have a mix of both AD and CGR folks.

YN's have deployed overseas each time of the two times, with two different PSU's, that I have deployed with.

It happens.

Basically the same thing they would normally do here stateside. Paperwork.

But add to their plates qualifying at the range, getting fitted for gas masks and wearing MOPP gear, and other tasks we non-admin folks did regularly.

In the reserves do you get paid more if stationed at a psu?

Well, not necessarily paid more, but there was a time that PSU folks got 60 drills per year as opposed to the 48 drills that non-PSU Reservists were authorized.

I'm not sure is this is still the case, you need to check with current PSU folks.

Good luck!

JerryG, thanks again for the feedback. Gasmask and MOPP gear readiness aside, do YN's play a pivotal role if deployed? I don’t want to sit in a tent or ship filing paperwork away from my family when I could do the same thing here. If deployed with a PSU I would rather be in a small boat armed on patrol or standing watch. But, based on my education and work experience the only rating I will get is YN, possibly SK.

Ahhh, but there's nothing that says you can't request a lateral change in rating once you're in - subject to command approval and the needs of the service.

Can't speak to what YN's do in PSU's now, but in my past experience, deployed or not, there's always admin work to be done - that would be your primary function. You will most likely be trained in other areas and roles in the unit, but your main weapon is your workstation... Wink

TampaBayWaters -

If you would like to talk more about the role of a YN at a PSU, you can send an e-mail to jarrett.l.swann@uscg.mil. I am the Active Duty YN1 at PSU 305.

Tonys Hags-
Also, to answer your question, Are you paid more at a PSU?
Yes, Effective January, 2008 all enlisted members are paid $25.00 extra a drill. Also you are authorized 60 IDT drills and 15 ADT-AT drills.
