I'm an MK2 that has received a bonus for a 6 yr enlistment at 2.5 for a kicker. Recently I have thought about changing rate to sk. I still have 2 yrs left for this enlistment. What will I have to pay back? The entire bonus or just the 2 yrs that I have left on my enlistment, or a portion of the up front amount? And will they take it directly from my pay in one shot like an over payment or will they just stop paying me on the anniversary of my enlistment? Any info will be helpful and insightful. Thank you in advance for your time.
You will required to pay back all unearned bonus. To make the math simple, we can use your numbers. You would complete only 4 of the 6 years you promised. That means you did not earn 1/3 of it. You can keep 66% of the total. You got 50% up front. Each anniversary, you get about another 10%. So - depending on the exact date, you have recieved either 80% or 90%. Let's say your timing is good and it is 80%. So - you know owe about 14% of your total, or about 1 1/2 times what you got on your last payment, AND all future payments are stopped. If you are even thinking about it - do not spend a dime of any monies you get between now and when you decide. Be prepared for it all to come out at once. Over payment recoup's are a bear and almost always troublesome.
