1st thing you are going to have to do is get qualified in your billet on the cutter.
Then after a period of time when you have shown yourself to be a GREAT performer you can request to strike whatever speciality you would like.
First learn about your ship and your job and then look at all the other stuff.

To answer your question directly. First thing you need to do is get your quals done and get promoted to FN. You will spend a lot of time in the engine room doing drawings of the different systems of the ship "Fire Main, Fuel System" and many others. You will be doing Damage Control and System Failure drills along with getting your DC Quals, if you really push hard you can get your basic shipboard DC qual done in a matter of weeks if you push your Duty Sections to help. Keep on your fellow FN's, MK's, DC's to sign those quals and assist in helping as you come across issues. Many have the feeling of those that help them selfs deserve help. Those that slack off and don't push to get qualified can stand Port and Report. After qualified, you should talk to your First Class and ask them about the ships policy on striking. If they have a active Striker Program follow the guidelines and seek out Striking. If the ship does not have a active Striker Program, you should ask to have your name put on the "A" School List. Being a YN is not only a Desk Job you can get underway, work in a MSST as a deployable billet. You can seek out and get Boarding Team Member or even a Boarding Team Officer. Underway as a YN on the Black Hulls you have even more opportunities to get qualifications you would never think about "Boom Operator, Master Helmsman, QMOW" and many more. Not to mention as a YN Underway you earn valuable sea service points for future Service Wide Exams. Don't just think of a YN as a desk jockey many of us have done our time at sea and we are reaping the rewards now.
