I was just medically retired and I elected to sell back 40.5 days of leave. I have two questions regarding that. One, what happens to the .5, and two, how long should it really take for that to be processed? Also, I have a couple of questions about my retirement pay. Is it based on my high 3 or is it just based on my rank at time of retirement and my disability percentage? Love to know when I should expect my first payment for that as well if anyone has any idea. I appreciate any answers you folks can give me and greatly appreciate your time and expertise! Take care.
As far as the retirement program (High-3, etc), it depends upon your DIEMS (Date of Initial Entry into Military Service).
Leave: When you sell leave back, PSC(ses) (the Separations branch at PSC) will take your current basic pay (only) and divide that by 30 (all pay computations are based on a 30 month), then multiply that "per day rate" by the number of days you sold, this case, 40.5. That will be included in your final pay. If I'm not mistaken (verify with your YN at your last unit, (1) you LES will let you know how long you should expect your final Active Duty pay, and (2) it should be no more than 120 to 180 days. I know it seems long, but they want to ensure they have all transactions that may be delayed in processing.
As far as your first payment, that depends upon your official retirement date. Usually, if all transactions process with no errors by the (I believe) 20th of month, you will receive your first retired check on the 1st of the following month. This also depends upon if you are being permanently medically retired or temporary.
Hope this answers your question.
Again, make sure you check with your SPO (as I haven't been in the SPO in over 6 years, and a lot has changed since then; I am also not at the office to double check the manuals, etc.)
Thank you very much for your help. That helps out a lot. This all happened kinda quick so I honestly didnt do as much question asking before I got out as I would have liked. So, thanks again and have a great week.
