Not a YN and I had a question regarding the number of dependants you are allowed to have in order to get an overseas unit. I was looking into Kodiak, AK but I read in the Persman that an E-5 can only have three dependants and I have four. It also stated that you may be able to obtain a waiver depending on needs of the service, command authorization etc. How easy is this to get? Or am I unable to go to Alaska because I have one too many dependants? Thank you.

Kodiak won't be a problem.

It won't be a problem to get a waiver, or it won't be a problem to go to Kodiak specifically b/c it's a critical area? I really appreciate your feedback! Smile

Little off topic but I recall Kodiak was very family oriented, good place to raise kids. Wish I was going!

Both, I don't know the in's and out's of requesting a waiver (without the personnel manual plopped in front of me); however, I have seen people go to Kodiak with their whole families. They do not choose to leave "this dependent" or "that dependent" behind. Therefore, a waiver is easy. Now if you were going somewhere else overseas, that could pose a problem. For instance, Bahrain is restricted duty. No dependents allowed and a waiver would be nearly impossible.

I would take the time to contact the Pers. Warrant to find out if you could get a waiver before putting in for it. I have seen it both ways (approved and rejected).
From my understanding and experience it all depends on your rank. I know for E-7 they will grant the waiver.
Shoot me an e-mail at work and I will point you in the right direction.
