My name is Francis Mendez and i am currently a fireman apprentice on the coast Guard cutter Juniper. and I would like to know the requirements to become a yeoman, and what type of jobs and places do yeoman's go? I would also like to know how long dose it take after putting my name on the A school list to be able to go to yeoman A school?

Go to that link and you can see what the requirements are for being a yn. It will also tell you how many people are on the A school list. Right now ive been hearing the wait time is roughly a year after getting placed on the list. YN's go just about every where besides stations.

Echo,

Since you are on the CGC JUNIPER, it would be wise to talk to your YN on board. Also in today's Coast Guard you should of filled out an Inidividual Development Plan (IDP) where you can state your career goals at this time. You should also talk with those in your chain of Command. Also make sure of you Rate choice, don't be one of those who think if they go YN, that you will not go to sea. Choose it because you want to be a YN.

Echo,
I agree with YNC G. (MaroonTide) Choose your rate for the right reasons and you'll be happier in the long run. Even 3 years is a long time to do a job you don't like.
Read the other thread on this board with the same title, especially my post.

Good luck!

First rule of thumb is never go off what you believe, look it up in a manual so you can back yourself up. Currently the end of course test is not complete, however you can strike and start learning what we YN's do. The new striker course is great and I prefer YN's that have gone through a striker program with someone that actually made him or her learn. A School YN's seem too push through for numbers versus actually learning the ins and outs of the rating.

Take your time learning, and learn both Admin side and Pay side, too many YN's are focused on one area.
