I am currently an SN at a small boats station and am trying to plan out my career. I'm currently looking at the ME rating but I've been given the opportunity by my command to strike BM while I wait for the ME rate to open up and the A school to become available. My question is if I complete the BM striker program am I required time in service, just like completion of A school requires? Or am I able to complete the striker program then immediately leave for another A school if I were to be chosen for the ME rate? I have one last thought as well, if I complete the BM striker program does that effect the 6 month waiting period required for re-testing parts of the ASVAB if i've already done a retest within the last 6 months? Sorry it’s a lot and I've trying looking this information up but am unable to find the information I need to make an informed decision as what I will do with my career.

I see that no one replied to your question and that I hope you already got your answer. If not here goes. I would get any training that they would offer me and move on. If you are currently on a waiting list for an "A" school and make E4, you should go to the head of the class and get orders. I struck for YN in 1978 while at my first duty station in Alaska. I made E4 enroute to my next duty station for coprsman "A" school. Since I was young, stupid and only home for 5 days from Alaska, I declined the offer. I don't regret that decision, but I might have made a better difference in the USCG. I was in for 4 years and now 10 years in the USCG Auxiliary. My only regret is not staying in Reserves! I would now have 34 years for pay.

sorry. got ahead of myself. I made E4 enroute to my next duty station and then received orders for corpsman (HM) "A" school while on leave for 60 days. I declined the orders.

Careful with that advice. If you are on an A-School list and succesfuly complete a striker program, you are removed from any A-School list the second your name goes on the striker list, which makes you rated. Once you are rated, you may request a change of rating. If you got rated through a striker program, you have no obligated service. That doesn't mean you can do whatever you want. You will have to be released from the rating.
