I retired voluntarily retired three years ago due to severe foot pain. I had VA appeals in process at the time(since 2004) for service connected disabilities however they were not yet decided. I had worked many years under a lot pain/stress but could not afford retire until I was 62 years old. I retired from the Fed Gov as a GS-11.

After retirement, I was granted 70 % service connected disabilities for severe bilateral foot deformities, Charcot-Marie-Foot disease (CMT), hearing loss and tinnitus. My largest percentage disability is for the feet and CMT with a combined rating of 50% since they are so the same ideology.

I am considering applying for IU since I now find the need to go back to work (bad economy) and my doctor claims it would be unwise since the feet problems continue to deteriorate.

Is worth my while to apply for IU? My conditions have worsened since I retired however I was not getting a VA disability at the time of retirement.

Advice would be appreciated.

If you have one disability that prevents employment rated 60%, you may be considered for IU. If you you have 2 or more disabilities that render you unable to work, with one on them being at least 40% disabling, you may be considered for IU. You will need to doctor to say you can not work due to your service connected disabilities.

IU pays about the same rate as 70% SC. It would not be to your advantage to go the IU route.

IU pays at the 100% rate. For your first post it would be nice to give the right information. You will find many discussion on IU in these forums. The reason for IU is that it is hard with multiple disabilities to get above 90%, so that those with disabilities at 60% or 70% combined that can not work are able to receive 100% SC compensation.
