I retired in 2002. Since then I have worked several low paying jobs that were non challenging and were just awful to deal with on a daily basis. So I quit. I have a pretty good nest egg saved up over the years. I am single, never been married with no children and I live alone. My question is can I survive on my retirement pay alone? I am retired E-6/USAF so you can guess what my pay is a month. It's been a year since I last worked and so far it been going okay for me. My only problem is that I AM BORED ****LESS!! Now I wish I hadn't quit the job that I had and I would like a job just to have something to do with my life. Does anyone else here live only on their retirement pay? Also when I turn 62 will I get Social Security in addition to my retired pay.
I can't tell you what to do about boredom but I don't have that problem. I am retired Army & on SS.

There are many Service Organizations, VA or Civilian Hospitals/clinics and other places such as the Red Cross you could volunteer at.

i also could not stand the boredom and now work seasonal in the winter months and a couple days a week the rest of the year. It does help the boredom a good hobby or even volunteering is a good diversion also.
I agree with the other posters here. If you don't feel like working at all and are bored, then find some volunteer work to do in your community.. Church activities, veterans organizations, community outreach organizations, yes some are not for everybody, but GET INVOLVED! I'm sure you have some talents that you can share with others. You can't get to know people unless you get involved with others.
You can live OK (not many luxuries) on your retirement pay. I recommend that you delay taking Social Security as long as you can (up to age 70). I say that because the longer you delay Social Security, the more money you get. After age 70, it does not matter. Social Security is based on your highest 35 years of work. If you don't have 35 years, you get zeroes for those non-working years and that'll affect your check. You never know whats going to happen in life and you want more money when you need it, not for wants).
Recommend you take a part time job (rent a car companies, dealerships - driving vehicles, etc) These jobs are low stress and managers can't screw with you when you're driving vehicles from one location to another. The pay is usually more than minimum wage but you'll find that its one of the few jobs in the civilian world where you're working with people your own age. Voluntering is another great idea. You need to direct your energies.
