Whats the current situation? Its looking like a ghost town there. So many houses to chose from now, compared to 2 years ago. Is flight school dying?

I have been here for a year now and I wouldnt say that it is dying, but I dont think its getting any bigger. I have been looking for a place off post and the choices really arent all that many. I dispise the people that run the on post housing here. It is such a flawed system.

That's right, because the national housing market and credit crunch would have nothing to do with it.

I am interested to hear more in this. My wife and I are considering on post housing, but I need to hear ins and outs first before making the decision once again to live off-post and get up an hour early just to make it to PT.

I was just curious, because I'm renting out my town home down off of Rucker Blvd (Dunwoody,) and I noticed that seemingly more and more of them in that neighborhood are coming up for rent.

I currently have mine rented to an Apache flight student, so I'll assume at least that he'll be living there awhile.

Honestly, from everything I've heard about Rucker on post housing, I'd still rather live off post. The 10 min drive to PT really wasn't that bad, just had to get there a little early if I wanted a good parking spot. Don't remember what BAH is there, but the townhouses rent for around $8-900, and my electric bill was never over $100 in the middle of summer.

Well, the BAH rates are not that bad, for E-5 w/ dependents, I'd be looking at $919 for 6 weeks and then it goes up to 1272 for W-1 w/ dependents. Is it a good area, how are the houses?

I'd appreciate it if you posted a link showing off-post housing options around post...

I've found that the Realty Executives office in Enterprise has about 80% of the townhome rental selection there. I'd go through them; they have been pretty good to me. You can find them on the internet, as well as all of their current available rentals. If you google "for rent enterprise, al", they're the first search result. The townhouses are all fairly new, I think around 13-1500 sq ft., with single car garages; some with double. Rent is seemingly based on how new they are/distance from post.

I found this link...

We will have to come down there and see for ourselves. Can't tell much from the pictures. Some houses look good and new and rent is so low, I hope there isn't a trick in there.

That's them. I found that rentals & houses in Enterprise are cheaper in comparison to many other cities. No tricks; they have been very decent to me, especially considering the volume of business they seem to do.

When my husband went through flight school the place was booming. Well as "booming" as Fort Rucker can be, which isn't very. However I've heard that the way it works in the WO world is they send a bunch of guys through flight school until they are overloaded with them. Then, they wait until they are short on WOs and then select a bunch more to go.

Maybe Rucker is going through one of those waiting periods. I know that Hawaii is pretty full right now. As of a few months ago they were turning OH-58 pilots away because they had too many.

Living on-post to me and my husband seemed like a waste of money. Why give them all of our BAH for second rate (maybe thrid rate) housing, when we could get decent housing off-post for less?

Totally agreed. Given throughout WOCS we get E-5 BAH w/dependents which is $919, a townhome around 800-850 should do well. After you pin WO1, the BAH goes up to 1272 which is more than enough for the rent and utilities.

They are building townhomes really quickly for some reason. It seems the average population of flight students does not fluctuate that much thought. There are just a LOT of available properties out there.

All your BAH for on post sub par housing or 800 for a nice off post townhouse? All my friends that started on post have moved off to save money.
