I'm not a 15G, but a 15U (CH-47 Repairer). For the most part, Airframe guys will stay on the airfield. There is always a slight chance that a 15G *might* be pulled for a DART mission (Downed Aircraft Recovery Team) but I have yet to hear about any Airframe guys going on missions. So your husband will be as safe as possible, given the threat environment that exists over there. I don't know what the Internet situation is over there, but at most major installations, there is some type of Internet available. Each place (FOB) is different and improvements do happen with time. Are there any OEF Veterans in his unit that he can ask? Good Luck! Matt SPC, AV US Army OCS Selectee Class 303-09 |

He always tells me not to worry and all the people he knows are deployed right now, he was on profile so he couldnt deploy with them. I just hope that they have any kind of internet or phone he could use. I have heard of skype but i dont know how this works |

CMTaMedic just got back from Kandahar, Afghanistan this past month and answered the Communications question in another forum here. http://forums.military.com/eve...422001#6840028422001 Not sure if that answers your Internet question. |

Your husband will be able to have internet in his room at Kandahar for around $70/month. It is offered through AAFES (the BX/PX people)and works pretty well.
Skype is a must-have program for both of you. It basically turns a computer into a normal telephone, and works well even with the relatively low bandwidth your husband will have. Computer-to-computer calls are free, and he can get unlimited computer-to-telephone calls for something like $4/month. If he really splurges (around $10/month) he can get a phone number with your area code, so you can call him as a local number, and leave voicemail if he is not there. Download it free from Skype.com, it is easy to figure out. I would be shocked if he ever left the base for any reason. |

Ahhh yes, Kandahar, land of Internet, cable TV, pizza hut, burger king, and my personal favorite Tim Hortons!!! Compared to the places we did missions in when I was there, KAF is a vaction. I remember walking out to the birds to go out on month long missions going "gosh these aviation guys got it made, they get to go back to their room every night." I was jealous haha. He'll be fine and should have plenty of time to talk to you as much as you'd like.

this brings a tear to my eye. internet, kandahar, room and $70 used in the same sentence. It's been four years... To one day return to KAF as an Aviation Warrant would be... an arrival. Don't be like what's her name, worried about her husband being faithful during his trip to Korea... the ratio is so impossible at KAF, there's no way a female could fit your husband into her schedule. |
