Another civilian applicant here,
Im trying to put together the strongest possible packet that i possibly can in hopes of getting accepted the first time around (arent we all!). I have good letters, but not from current aviators. (working on that) I take the ASVAB tomorrow at MEPS and i have been studying religiously for it. I have also been studying just as hard for the AFAST. My question is, will outstanding test scores make up for anything else that might be lacking? I dont have any real problems with my packet. (got busted when i was 19 for underage drinking, thats the only black mark on my record and im 22 now) My recruiter seems sure that i will get accepted but then again, hes not an aviator... |

Try and try again. Just put your best foot forward, that's all you can do. Be honest with others and yourself, and you'll be fine. The Army has taken in a huge number of folks over the past several years, and I'm betting that's going to slow down real soon. It really needs to, somehow we've got alot of (you fill in the blanks here) around, that never should have been selected. Alot of people look good on paper, but when it's time to shut thier mouth and do PT, the true individual shows. Okay, off my rant, good luck.

I don't know how far scores will carry you in order to fly, however the underage drinking thing shouldn't be that huge of a problem. I got a 96 on the asvab and i was told i could do anything. and your gt score which is a category of the asvab usually needs to be 110 or higher for advanced stuff. i know for SF training and other "smarter" MOSs it should be above 110. I had to get a secret clearance for a job in the civilian world which i didn't end up taking, and i got busted for drinking when i was 16. actually i got caught stealing liquor from people's garages then was drunk at my friends house when the cops came to find us. All my ticket said was possession of alcohol by a minor, but in my clearance application i included all the details. My buddy has a top secret cause he's an intel guy, and he said it's all about being honest. The key is to not have anything hidden that another country could use against you in order to get you to spy on them. Now i don't know if you need the clearance to fly, but I'm assuming if they are willing to trust a person with critical intel they'd let someone fly. I had a buddy in college who had 5 drinking tickets and he's now a company commander in a ranger bat, so I'm thinking you should be fine, just nail the tests and you'll be flying in no time

USUALLY...and I stress USUALLY, the clearance has nothing to do with the wiggling of sticks (someone correct me if anything flying is classified, but I am guessing not). Where you need the clearance is for access to things like COMSEC keying material for radio transmissions that are kept secure, and access to information for missions that have something classified about them. The clearance is simply about access to information and operation of equipment with classified information.

Just got back from MEPS. I took the ASVAB. 98 AFQT and a 137 GT. I hope this will be enough to impress the board but...
I failed my hearing test! Only on the highest frequency. The limit was a 55, I tested at a 60. Ive never had a hearing problem in my life and at this point I am very worried. My recruiter (and the Doc at MEPS) said I should be able to get a waiver no problem but how will this affect me when I take the flight physical? Is there any kind of waiver available for the flight physical? I just barely missed it! I guess ill know tomorrow. |

You failed the 6000 Hz range? How did you do that? Do you constantly have a 6khz ringing in your ears? Seriously, I would invest in a good ear wax cleanser (not q-tips), make sure your ears are good and clean and dry so all the scilia (the little hairs that actually do the brunt of the work) are free to move about, and retake the test.
6khz isn't that common of a frequency to be overexposed to if you are not already in aviation. I think you had a bad day. |
