I’m another 153A wannabe from the AF. I'm getting to Rucker in late Sep. I have no experience with rucking/road-marches/or land-nav but I know I need good boots. Should I get desert tan boots now and break them in? Will I be allowed to wear the boots if I bring my own? I know moon boots are a no-go and plan on getting Belleville/Altama/Exxospeed or the like. Is desert tan the same as brown suede? The packing list says brown suede. Thanks in advance for any advice.
The Army will issue you some pretty good boots. They'll give you a pair of Hot WX boots and a pair of Temperate boots and you'll have plenty of time to break them in before you do any land nav or ruck marches.
If you really want to get a pair to break in before you go, you can get a pair of Belleville 340DES. They are cooler (temperature wise) than the issued flight approved boots and they're pretty comfortable.
I would certainly urge you to get a pair of the Belleville's like jsmith mentioned or any other flight approved boot prior to arriving for WOCS. If you are unaccustomed to walking in those boots, the simple marching to and from class can wreak havoc on your feet should the boots not be properly broken in. I learned this lesson with a new pair of Corcoran 1500's my first week of WOCS. I still have the mole skin laying around here someplace to prove it.
