I'm trying to organize a static display for my school and am waiting for our legal eagles to give the OK. To push the process, I would like to give them some sort of evidence that our grassy area is large enough to handle a safe landing/take-off while keeping the students a safe distance away. The best recommended dimensions I can find on the net is 100 ft x 300 ft LZ with a 200 ft keep- away radius. There are no overhead obstructions and only medium size oak trees (<30 ft) around the perimeter. Question; Is there a publically accessible document (FAA or DOD) that I can forward that details distances and conditions for a non-emergency landing at a public location for a UH-60L?
150' sq ft landing area clear of obstructions. No obstacles greater than 150 ft within 1200 feet of the landing site along the approach and departure paths, and no obstacles greater than 50 ft tall within 400 feet of the landing site along the approach and departure paths.
Of course, all numbers are approximate and the unit will have to conduct their own recon. If you have athletic fields, those usually meet the criteria, depending on other obstructions in the area.
Look at chapter 4, page 11 of the pdf, page 4-11 proper. This is for a standard landing pad area for an Army helicopter. Again, the unit supporting the static display will conduct their own analysis and risk assessment for the landing area, but this will give you a good idea for a basic criteria.
