Thought you might enjoy the following cover shot of the Medevac Blackhawks in Korea.

Absolutely outstanding photographs. What are the yellow stripes for?

The yellow stripes are to identify the aircraft as a medevac helo. Medevac helos are one of the only (IIRC maybe THE only) aircraft allowed to fly in the restricted area near the DMZ, and these yellow stripes are supposed to tell the nervous North Koreans not to unleash AA because it's an unarmed rescue aircraft.

I served with the 542nd Med. Co. (AA) at Camp Page from 2001-2002.

Oooohh. Is it just extra protection for the aircraft or do the North Koreans not believe in the red cross on a white field, which admittedly does not cover as much as the yellow stripes?

Sorry for the late reply. The yellow stripes can be seen from very far away and are very distinctive. The regular red-cross/white-background symbol for medevac helicopters isn't distinctive enough.

Korea had some strange aviation customs and rules when I was there. Camp Page was in Area 1, so there were always extra rules to follow. For instance, the medevac aircraft were all parked on the airfield at Camp Page facing south, so as not to be a symbol of aggression to the North. The Longbows on the same airfield, however, were all parked facing north, for the opposite reason. Also, there could not be any formal assigned crewmembers to medevac aircraft, so there were no names painted on the airframes. There were so many of these strange rules that I doubt I learned them all in my year there.
