Great! When does the board meet?

Can they get you in for the May Board? |

It's a state board, and it meets in late May. I should know my place on the OML around the first of June.
The S1 seemed impressed with my packet, but for the sake of my sanity I'll keep my expectations low. |

First off, good luck 21M. Couple questions, what state? Have you been a member of that unit? And if you don't make the cut-off on the OML, do you get bumped up, or you submit a new packet? I want to learn more about the Guard process. Thank you for your time. |

The unit is the 1-189TH AVN BN out of Helena, Montana. I am currently in the guard, but not in this battalion. If I am not selected at this board, I will just update the changes in my packet without "resubmitting."
Montana is a pretty small state. There are only 2-3 openings, and around 6-8 applicants (I'm not as sure about the # of applicants) submitting Warrant packets this year. So, I would imagine that this process is quite different from Big Army's. |

Thanks 21M, are those annual slots? Hope you get it man. I am in touch with one of your neighboring states, (AH-64) I imagine they would have the same amount of slots. If Big Army doesn't pan out, I will try there. Paperwork wise, process is very similar to NG. Although, you have extra paperwork required for the Guard itself, fedrec and all that. I will follow your progress here and keep me posted please. Good luck once again. |

Yes, annually. I was told that the unit requested four warrant slots, expecting to be granted two. Hopefully they'll get all four, so my chances are doubled.
...BY THE WAY... Thanks to everyone here for helping me get this far. This forum played a very large part in my decision to go for WOFT, and absolutely helped me surmount all of the obstacles along the way. Regardless of whether I am selected or not, this place really is a great asset to anyone trying to navigate the maze. Thanks again! |

^ I agree. There is so much information here between the posts, members, and the links to other helpful sites. I know it helped me greatly to understand the process.
I'm leaving for basic training tonight and then WOCS this summer, so I don't know when I will get a chance to log in again. But to everyone with a packet in or who is planning on putting one in soon, GOOD LUCK! And to everyone who has been so helpful here, THANKS! |

Johndoe,
Would you mind explaining your experience with the LASIK? Did you take the flight physical and consult with them before getting LASIK or did you do it on your own beforehand? Any information about it would be helpful. Thanks. |

I had the procedure in 2006. I'm not sure but I think you have to wait six months after your surgery before you apply. Go to the WOC website and print out the extra paper work for your doctor. There's a few extra test's they have to check post-op to make sure your ok. He'll use this to record your results. Take that with you to your flight physical but MAKE COLOR COPIES. I got VERY lucky in finding an optometrist that is a flight surgeon in the reserve's. Get some contact numbers for Rucker Aero-Med for your doctor. The paper work has to be filled out just right and he may have to call them with questions. If it's done right, you'll breeze right through the eye exam. If it's not, the Army Doc will want to do it. This will add extra time/hassel to your flight physical. Hope this help's. If I can do more drop me a line at shanekisling@yahoo.com

Basque:
The wait time before you can submit a Class IA post-op is 3 months. Everything you ever wanted to know about flight physicals and waivers can be found HERE |

Do you mean the civilian numbers (are you sure)? the MILPER I received showed 18 select, 26 non in March. I was told this was a monthly board whose dates and deadlines don't coincide with anything on the USAREC woft website. Deadlines are less than a week prior to board convene date. My recruiter had the MILPER in his hand the next day. Just... added confusion haha. |

If I am non select after the second board does anyone know if I have to wait before applying again? I have heard 6 months but I have also heard there is no wait so not sure which is true. I am applying as a civilian if that matters.

Great. Thanks a lot for your help guys. That website had it all. I think I'll take the flight physical before making any decisions about eye surgery.

Does anybody know how long an "Exception to Policy" takes at Ft. Rucker right now? I took my initial flight phys yesterday and was told to go get a audiology exam done because I was just outside the 25db on the 2000hz (I was @ 30db). I was a former Police Officer, and had an earpiece in my ear for the last 8 years, sirens gunshots etc. I am already a commercially rated CFI MEI CFII pilot looking to go into the WOFT program. They are telling me it could take up to 6 mos to get the Med folks to sign the "exception to policy" waiver and send it back so I can go to boards? Does anyone have any insight? How can I push this through or do I just sit and wait? Does anyone have any similar experience?

If you can retake your audiogram, wear foamies (ear plugs) from the time you wake up, to the moment you walk into the sound booth.
The difference between the test I took this way, and one I took after working around machinery all day, was 5-15 lower across the board. |

Yeah, I did that....actually I wore ear plugs for the 2 days prior to the test and sat on my A** for the weekend in a quiet house reading the close captions on the TV. That didnt work so well. While I did better than the one @ MEPs, still not enough. Bottom line is I am out of the range I need to be. Im ok with that because it doesnt effect my flying and I have NEVER missed a radio call or had anything happen as a result of my deficent 2000hz range. I just want to get through the process and move onward and upward, but like I said, I hear Rucker is bogged down and they have to go to a Board for approval.
