all things being equal, do you guys think that a 111 on the AFAST is high enough to get accepted?

I think that is one of many factors that go into the selection process. If you search this forum you will find accounts from all kinds who got accepted with all kinds of scores. But as Traffic said, you can't retake it so drive on.

CONFUSION... ROGER ROGER. You passed, got over the score required. It is a fine score. None of us here think that the AFAST is the sole measuring capability of your flight aptitude. Your score shows that you have over the minimum-acceptable aptitude to be taught to fly for the army. Now, move out and draw fire! |

(I am reposting this, I originally posted this one the recruitingarea. WOuld appreciate any information, Tank you) I am interested in becoming a helicopter pilot in the Army. I have more than a few questions and the web isn't TOO helpful so I thought I would try my luck here. Please email me at yeahthatlois@hotmail.com if you can help, Thank you.
I was looking at the requirements for applying for WOCS/WOFT listed on www.goarmy.com/about/warrant_officer.jsp and so far- - I DO have a high school diploma - I AM over 18 and under 33 - I AM a US citizen - I scored 106 on the AFAST, the cutoff score is 90 - I have a GT score of 127 - I meet the Army's height and weight standards - and I have taken a complete physical at MEPS already The only thing I'm missiong from their list of requirements is a Class 1A Flight Physical Examination Now, those are the requirements listed on the Goarmy.com website, I am sure there are more -Does anybody know if I will be disqualified because I have had LASIK on my eyes? -Is there anybody out there who is an Army helicopter pilot/warrant officer with any information, how do you like it? How was the training? How much flight time do you get? General questions -Does training count as part of your service? for example lets say WOCS and flight school takes about a year, would that year count as a good year towards retirement? - How does retirement work if you have a number of active duty years and years in the reserves? -Do years in the IRR count towards retirement? -Is there anyone out there who has been in 20+ years or are retired and regret staying in the military that long? -Is there anyone out there who retired at 37? WOw, that's a lot longer than I expected, I shall let you all go now. Thanks in advance for for any help you can give me! |

On paper, you look fine. Get some good LOR's and have a good PT Test. Also, you want a 1W physical, not a 1A. 1A is for LT's and Regular Line Officers. A 1W has some subtle differences.
I will go down the list and answer what I can. - You will not be DQ's because of LASIK. I had PRK and got picked up. Bring all your records of your pre- post-, and all follow up procedures. Make copies upon copies, and hand them out to your flight surgeon willingly. Better to have too much and let them sort it out than to have not enough and be screwed. - Your annual minimums vary depending on airframe, commander's requirements, and whether or not you are guard/reserve or active duty. But, the base line I think is 96 hours per year plus 10 hours of simulator time for EP's and IFR stuff. - Training will count as Time in Service but your commitment post-school does not start until you graduate flight school. - Your years in service in any branch will transfer over. - IRR does not count toward retirement. - 20 year question I can't answer, but I plan on staying in the Wo field until I am forced to retire. - I will be eligible to retire at age 38. What else? WOC Eric |

Ok guys, ..just wanted to get an experienced opinion on my situation. I have trolled these forums for 6 months now....as I get my package together. Little about me:
I am currently AD USAF Enlisted attempting the blue-2-green WOFT package...yes I have all the necessary paperwork 368-conditional release from the USAF all in order 30 years of age Physically Fit: Scored very well on Army PT test---number escapes me at the moment. Military Tests:
AFAST: 119 Flight Physical is Done and PASSED Military Schools:
Advanced Electronic Schools Civilian Education:
Bachelor's in Technological Management Masters in Criminal Justice: Intelligence 3.7 GPA/Dean's List I have all the LOR and appropriate paperwork filled out. Been to Iraq, going on 9 years AD and have been NCOIC and what not and firewall 5 Performance Reports my whole career...lots of leadership recognition, NCO of the quarter...and various other forms of recognition... The only LOR I do not have is from an aviator. I am AF and have no contact with Army CW3's where I am stationed....I know that the aviator LOR for -me- is recommended not mandatory.... What be my chances? Looks like I am going for the May Board. Also, my recruiter says since I am inter-services (blue-to-green) I will compete on the civilian boards. True? |

....btw I have had LASIK eye surgery...passed my physical with flying colors....flight surgeon said that is simply a "rubber stamp" procedure---basically if you can still see 20/20 after the procedure....you are GOOD to go

Doing an interservice transfer you will be compete against other active duty military, not civilians. A LOR is not mandatory but will really help you out on the board, because an Army aviator will know what kind of personality traits the board is looking for where an AF officer does not. Another misconception recruiters have with interservice transfers is that your official photo should be taken in a suit, not true, it should be taken in your dress uniform. Make sure any ribbons you wear in the photo are in your service record, they will check. Good Luck.

First Off,
Hi everyone. I wasn't aware there was such a comprhensive thread on this subject. Glad to see there's such an interest in this field. Secondly, To give you an idea of my backround so far: -AFQT- 94 -GT- 132 AFAST- 121 I attended the USAFA Prep School for one semester (didn't like it, lack of intel on the experience, wasn't for me, lesson learned) Traveled and studied different things on my own to get a feel for the "real world." Who knows anything at 18. Well, I knew I wanted to get laid more often.......... (note: more than one set of elipses) Decided that I wishing those dirty pricks dead wasn't working so I then decided to check out the Army Aviation. Met some refreshingly competent WO's and decided to go for a HS2FS slot. Competence seems to be a dying virtue in our society. Recruiter seems pretty decent. Former SF guy looking to settle down and retire. Lot of connections. Fairly new to the cloak and dagger. (Any former recruiters* please advise on training of recruiters so as to know what to avoid) Now, my question. I think that dropping out of the prep school looks very bad. My scores have been decent so far and I can get some good LOR's but to those HS2FS selectees What do you think made your packets stand out? Next, I don't have any insurance (Never needed any) so if the post about the dental exam is correct, I need to get some cavities filled but I don't want to do that if I don't have to. How reliable is that info? I simply want to be part of a team of competent individuals who enjoy being part of the BEST team. I've been missing that since I played on a 12 year old all star baseball team. AV seems to be the correct path. SERE looks like fun too. Damn, I really want this bad, more than getting laid more often even. Any hel would be much appreciated. |

Here is one thing that you need to lean, my friend. First impressions, especially in your case, mean EVERYTHING.
The only thing that I walked away from with after reading your post was the fact that you went to various places in the hopes of being laid and you probably sound like a tool if you speak in any manner resembling your fantastic typing skills. Why did that stick out? Perhaps it was because it was probably the most immature thing that I have read on this board since the moronic discussions with Loop3d, and tentpole. Ask yourself, would you REALLY say what you wrote in front of a Senior Warrant Officer whom you were asking to write a letter of recommendation for you? Hell no! A lot of these guys on probably would have helped, but now think that you are a punk kid who just wants to fly helo's, flaunt the fact you are a flier (notice I did not say aviator), and get laid. If you want to do all the strutting, c0ck waving, and Hollywood Hero bull$hit, go join the Navy. I hear their pilots are looking to get laid too. Who knows, you might just find yourself a "stick buddy." That being said... Your scores look fine. Do the legwork and search every damn thread on this forum for the answer to your questions because they are here. With regard to shortcomings in your packet, a good Letter of Recommendation and a solid track record of responsibility will go far. WOC E. |
