Tacking this at the top.
Here's where you can ask about the Warrant Officer Flight program. I haven't seen any one discussion on this. There seems to be quite a few. If there is one in particular that you want me to stick up here, let me know and I'll make the swap. Put the link in a reply on this one. |

1IDVET,
I think this is exactly what we need for the forum/board. One stop shop for all things applying to WOFT. I will try and search and post appropriate information here from all the previous questions and answers. First things first, if someone wants to learn about the program, they have to go read about it here: Warrant Officer Recruiting website It has examples and instructions about how to go about submitting your packet. |

I have this one saved in my favorites. It covers appearance and what to bring to your letter of recommendation interviews, as well as some insight into the questions the board may ask. |

Flight Physical:
Can take a couple months to set up, allow time for this. This is what you can expect (from my flight physical) (I am a civilian BTW might be different for active duty) -You should not eat at least 12 hours before your physical. First thing they will ask for is a blood sample, 3 viles. After they take the blood sample you can go eat. -When they take the blood you will be asked to pee in the cup next. -Dental: They will take multiple x-rays of your teeth. Then a dentist will inspect your teeth. If you can have your teeth checked out BEFORE your flight physical, 2 or more current cavities disqualifies. If you have two or more cavities at that time you will have to get them fixed and have it in writing from your dentist. -Eye sight: the usual stuff that you might have done at MEPS. Then they dialate your eyes, (bring sun glasses BTW it doesn't wear off for hours) less than 45 minutes later you will see another doctor. They will have you look into two sets of lenses and they decide which is more clear. Those who have been to a vision specialist might be familiar with it. -EKG: You will need to be hooked up to a EKG machine. They put nine patches on your chest and hook you up to the ekg machine. 30 seconds of laying on your back and your done. -Flight Surgeon: Fist they take your height, weight, and blood pressure usually done by a nurse. You will next see the flight surgeon, he will ask you questions about your health: broken bones, surgeries, etc etc etc. You will also be asked about your family health history, like history of heart problems, blood pressure, etc. They will take measurements of your torso lenth and arm length. Also the turn your head to the left and cough (you know what I'm talking about) will be done too. Also note that they might ask if you have any scars or birthmarks, show'm if you got'm -Your done, took about a month for my recruiter to get a hard copy of the flight physical in hand, in all it took 3 months for me. Plan accordingly. |

just to give you all some info. WOCS is a joke now. It is so laid back. Things are different. If you have trouble with WOCS then you will have hell with Flight School. I am in IERW Primary right now and it is a blast, but you have to study and give your all. Every other week I am up at 0345 in the morning and catching a bus at 0430 to go to the flight line and then have class after lunch until around 15-1600. You will be tired, but it is worth it. Do not sweat WOCS, there is no more 7 minute drill, no more greeting of the day, no more yelling, phase inspections, it is simple! Hell they can even use their cell phones now on break. WOCS to me was just an obstacle or right of passage to get to where I am at now. If you really want to fly go for it. I am not doing it for the money, the money is not that great.

The Army Reserves as well as the Army National Guard have the same program. The choice is up to you. Happy Holidays.

I have talked with the Guard and Reserves and both want me to come in enlisted, serve for two years then apply. Even if I wanted to do this I don't have the time. The high school to flight school option seems like a mystery to recruiters. I have served in the military for 13 years and know better than this. Any suggestions out there?

Hey Hick76,
You are the first person that I have found, who is in IERW. Can you please tell me more about school. I just signed a contract with the National Guard. I am leaving for WOCS in Feb. As for Eng02, I would talk to the guard about WOCS or OCS. They have slots open, if they say no, contact another Guard unit in another state. I have spent the past 5 years trying to get into IERW. Keep trying, good luck. |

Hey Heath and Hick 76.
I am in the process of re-enlisting into the national guard. I am wanting to go straight to WOCS and then IERW(High School to flight school). My recruiter tells me that the Colonel, who is the state's Aviation commander wants me to have an aviation MOS first like 15T first. A friend of mine who's co-worker is a helicopter pilot in the Guard wants to talk to me first and says to watch out, that is a recruiter trick to funnel me into a mechanics position. I would be really interested in learning how your processes are going. Heath, you said you signed a contract. Was that an enlistment contract. Did you get Aviator in your enlistment contract? Keep me posted. |

Hey Chad,
They gave me the option to go 15t and then to WOCS or OCS, so I could get a signing bonus of $10,000, but I didn't want to risk not flying and getting stuck as a mechanic, so I opted to go strait to WOCS, then IERW. Go talk with your friend who is a pilot, then try and get an interview with the company commmander of the guard unit. Bring your whole application package, including resume, letters of rec, flight physical, letter why you want to be a helicopter pilot, high school and college transcripts, and copy of your high school and college degree's. This will show the CO that you are motivated. Good luck. |

Heath,
Good tips. And congratulations on getting in to WOCS and IERW. That kicks ***. My recruiter told me that how it works is, after you have your interview with the (West Virginia) State Aviation Commander, you need to take a "Leap of Faith" by signing up in the 15T MOS. The issue for this being that someone needs to pay for your flight physical and that can only be done after you have made an enlistment commitment to the guard. I thought about maybe offering to pay for my own flight physical if I can get WOCS and IERW guaranteed in my contract. Haven't told this idea to the recruiter yet. part of the issue with me is a long crazy story. The short story is like this: 91-enlisted to Army Reserves as a junior in high school Split-Op (Basic between junior and senior year high school, reservist 'till AIT after HS graduation) 4 days after graduation, was hit dragged and run over by a car. Missed AIT(obviously) but continued to drill for two years with the unit. AIT kept being postponed because of follow-up surgeries. my unit really liked me and wanted to keep me but couldn't hold my slot open at AIT any longer. Had to discharge me. Told me they would write my discharge as entry level, not medical so that it would be easy to get back in. Throughout the years no recruiter would even talk to me because I have 14 screws, 3 plates in pelvis and metal nail and two screws in right femur. Now I have an orthopedic surgeon to take them out (hardware is no longer necessary) on February 22. this Guard recruiter said we can by-pass MEPS because of prior service and just go and get an Army physical with their doctor. My ASVAB scores still count and are good but will take the AFAST here soon when ready. Studdying ARCO study guide now. Then I have the interview with the State CO. See, this is the first recruiter who has shown me light at the end of a possible re-entry process. Active Army was looking at this huge ordeal of sending medical records to MEPS and being approved before I can even take my physical... So you see I am this unique case searching for my window of opportunity Hard to believe that was the short version, eh? I would definately be interested in learning more details of your process and how you went along. How old are you? and I notice you are not prior service. I see you have a degree. That helped I am sure. Did you interview with the CO of the Guard company you will be in or the State CO? |

Hey i'm a junior high and am very interested in WOFT. my main questions are, with a 3.0 GPA (B+) what are my chances of getting into WOFT right out of high school, what can i do to improve my chances, and do you think this is a good idea or should i wait until after college? My recruiter has suggested a 2 year community college flying course first or to enlist first. I would rather not waste time or money on these alternatives. Flying is my dream and WOFT seems like a great place to start. Any thoughts on this?

I need to know as a 32 year old male with an Avionic career in the Air Force Reserves, how good are my chances at Army Guard Warrant Officer? I also have a bankruptcy and a dwi from 6 years ago. I have college and a total of 12 years prior service.

If someone could clear this up for me it would be great.
I am 25 years old and have my private pilot ticket, and airframe license. My recruiter told me I had to enlist, and get MOS qualified before I could apply for the WOFP. But in my research it seems you can go from basic to warrant officer school then right to flight school. He told me the army website is misleading, and this (MOS qualified) in the only route to flight school. So I am a tad bit confused, clearly thats not so difficult to do. Any help would be greatly appriciated |

You were absolutely right. Either he/she doesn't want to do the extra work for the WOFT program or isn't informed on the process. Forget about that recruiter and find one that will WORK in your BEST interest. It's not uncommon for a recruiter to point you in another direction, especially when it is easier for him/her.

I POSTED THIS IN ANOTHER ANSWER BUT SINCE PEOPLE NEVER SEARCH OLDER THREADS I PUT IT IN HERE. READ THIS FIRST:
DISCLAIMER I HAVE ATTENDED NEITHER BCS OR FSXXI. This is my opinion and observations. BCS is Basic Combat Skills, the pilot trains on a OH-58 A/C. Learning the ins and outs of combat with an aircraft. Reacting to contact, planning a mission, map reading, navigation, selection of the best routes, the best flight modes. The focus is on the pilot becoming tactically proffeciant in a military aircraft. The student is focused on the application of these combat skills. Their is a 8 week portion of days where you learn these skills and apply them. Then a 4 weeks of nights where you continue to train these skills and learn the difference between days and nights. After BCS the pilot then transitions into an advanced aircraft. The courses range in different time frames for AQC, 60s(BLACKHAWKS) 4 weeks, 47s(CHINOOKS) 10 weeks, 64s(APACHES)18 weeks. I am sure of all of those except for apaches. There is only 4 AQC slots for 58s in fiscal year 2006 so if you want 58s get into FSXXI. I don't know anything about the AQC for 58s in fact I am pretty sure its not running any more. Those 4 slots are for the reserve unit up in the midwest. AQC focuses on the EPs, maneuvering the advanced aircraft and creates quick passed atmosphere where the student must pick up their aircraft already knowing the skills to fly in a basic tactical situation. FSXXI is seperated into several parts one of them is BCS. The pilot is responsible for learning everything the BCS students did except its in your "go to war aircraft". The student learns how to start up their aircraft, EPs, all the systems everything you need to know about your aircraft. There are still times dedicated to just EPs and general flying. Then time for combat skills landing in small areas moving tactically to different places in sunny and fun southern Alabama. There is a night portion where you fly at night conducting missions and operations. Gunnery if your an OH-58 or AH-64 pilot. The theory and how it was explained to me is that the Army thinks more time in your go to war aircraft will better prepare aviators. In talking with IPs mainly LSI(the government contractors) BCS was a great course and the jury is still out on FSXXI. Many commanders are happy with FSXXI because pilots coming to units are more acclimated to their aircraft(I say acclimated because it doesn't mean your a better pilot it just means you have spent more time in your aircraft.) It takes years, depends on aircraft to make a pilot in command. Flying and flight school is what you make of it. You work hard no matter what track you get you'll be ok. You sandbag it and don't carry your weight people will know and your gonna be found out for what you are. NOW FOR MY LITTLE RANT: Don't think in any way that BCS, AQC, FSXXI prepare you to go fly combat missions and be profeccient. Once you get to your unit and you learn all over. Whether LT or WO1 your gonna start from the bottom up you must prove yourself and relearn with IPs in your unit. They will not reteach you limits or EPs those are what you need to know and what you need have down with out question. If you don't want to continue life long learning then don't become an Army aviator save my time and yours. My IP came up to me at the end of primary and told me this, "Don't ever forget that you learn something new everyday. Aviation is a life experience. No matter if your an IP or a new WOJG you must always continue to learn and review your limits, Emergency procedures, your tactics, and your attitude." I have taken those words to heart and I have gotten through Primary, Instruments, BNAV, and now starting FSXXI. DON'T BECOME AN AVIATOR IF YOUR NOT READY TO PUT 100% INTO THIS. I have seen to many kids quit flight school, struggle, and waste valuable training time because they weren't ready for the experience. I am WO1 and I am paid to learn to fly, these are my opinions and my opinions only. |

THIS IS ABOUT BUBBLES READ THIS FIRST BEFORE YOU ASK ANOTHER QUESTION:
Okay heres the deal, your gonna have a bubble somewhere along the way. I have had two so far and I am waiting for my advanced aircraft (No I have had no med holds or any holds that my whole class hasn't experienced). The bubble for IERW is about 2 months and their getting better with that. You won't know until you get over to Bravo company, because they don't even know sometimes. It depends on how many people on hold can start and how far down the list your name is. Regardless, your WOCS OML will determine who gets class dates first. Once you start at Bravo company a new OML is established, so WOCS had nothing to do with my aircraft selection or whether I got BCS or FSXXI. Now for the wrench in the system, NG and reserves. They have reserved classes from the beginning and will be slotted ahead of you in every instance. Get used to it. Their state is paying for it, and AD comes second. Its not that big a deal, in fact I kinda like bubbles that last about a month or so and so far thats how long both mine have been. Just keep in mind that my experience in flight school will be different then even the guy two classes behind me because of the major changes. My WOC class was totally different then the classes behind us. So looking on this board is only gonna give you general guidelines and the guys that go through the latest courses can give you a better generaliztion about WOCS and new IERW. The two month hold for IERW is accurate because I have a buddy who graduated WOCS on December 2nd and is on hold till middle of February. Fight one battle at a time and just worry about Basic and WOCS. |

Here is a Glossary of terms in Flight School Don't ask about them use google if you don't under stand
WOFT- Warrant Officer Flight School You can apply as a civilian, enter the Army under the MOS and codes as 09W and be on track to become a pilot. Also known as: High School to flight school/Street to seat/interservice tranfers for flight school WOCS- Warrant Officer Canidate School 4-6 course where you enter enlisted and go through an officer course that is academically intensive now. IERW- Intial Entry Rotary wing training It is Primary and Instruments and now BNAV and Basic Warfight Skills. You learn to fly a TH-67 Helicopter from the ground up. They teach you every basic to flying. You then learn how to fly in the clouds. Then you learn how to navigate and fly around at lower levels then you ever did before. Time frame is changing check Army aviation websites to find out the total length now. BNAV- Basic Navigation A two week course on Navigating in a helicopter. Dying course. There are two models of it one that is the future of army aviation which will be implemented shortly, within the next year or two. The other is in effect now and is explained above. BCS- Basic combat skills Explained above. AQC- Advanced Qualification Course Explained Above. TH-67 The Basic Army Training helicopter Bell 206 or as my buddy calls it the TH-67 no stanger to danger. Enjoy its lots of fun. OH- Observation Helicopters AH- Attack Helicopters CH- Cargo Helicopters UH- Utility Helicopters OH-58 Kiowa Warrior AH-64 Apache UH-60 Blackhawk CH-47 Chinook UH-1 Huey EP- Emeregency Procedure The steps taken in the event of an emeregency, you memorize these. Limits The limits of the aircraft, you memorize these. MEDEVAC- If you need that explained you should look elsewhere for employment. CAV- Cavalary units A lot of aviation units are cav espically in the Attack community. |
