Who said 5k was the limit for getting a security clearance, your recruiter? That is total bunk. If that was even close to true, most cars nowadays cost 15-25k. So, by that logic, if you owed money on a car, you couldn't get a clearance. Further, have whomever told you that to check the median prices on houses. I think the U.S. average is in the mid 200k range. Again, if you owed money on a house, then you couldn't get a clearance. See where I am going with this?

I love how these things get blown out of proportion. I do clearances and special accesses for a living and have seen drug users, and the occasional bankruptcy get cleared. Granted, it was at the Secret level at the max, and it took some extra time, but they still got cleared.

Where most people run into trouble is unsecured debt like credit cards. But, as long as you aren't delinquent or in default on any loans, you are fine.

Now, armed with this knowledge, go forth and kick a$$!

This was the lady at MEPS who process the work for you clearance? She doesn't "grant" a clearance only the local Defense Security Service Office of Adjudications does that. She merely gets it to them. Take what MEPS says about clearances with a big grain of salt. They like to scare you. I have heard them tell some whoppers to me and I came back quoting paragraph and verse of the DSS manual about how F**&ed up they were.

I highly doubt they're going to lose it. You SHOULD have copies of everything in case that does happen. If not, get the packet back and head to Kinko's!!

Isn't the secret clearance taken care of once you sign your contract? That's what my recruiter is telling me.

Only if you fly the AH-90Z, then you need a Super Secret//Grandma//ID-TEN-T//SCI-FI

No but in all seriousness, all you need is a secret. I don't know what your recruiter has been telling you but sounds like he's been feeding your a spoonful of BS. You need to change recruiters or just do some fact checking against what he/she's been telling you.

hrntpilot, I am a detailed recruiter and I also just got picked up on this last board. I don't know too much about the security process but I can and will tell you about anything else you may want to know. There are a lot of recruiters out there who don't care about anything but their numbers, so if you think something may be fishy you can ask me and I'll give you the lowdown.

AirborneMO thanks alot! That makes me feel better! I will definately remember that! thanks again. Oh and my recruiter is a civilian recruiter retired from the army so i thought it would be a good idea to go with him as it seems if the army put any pressure on him he could just tell them to shove it. anyway thanks again!

He can't tell anyone to shove it, DoD still writes his paycheck and unlike active duty recruiters he gets money for every person he puts in boots. I'm not saying he is going to be a bad recuiter, just do your research and take everything with a grain of salt.
