I read somewhere recently that you have to be in PCS status to request Fixed Wing school. Anybody know if this is true?

You have to meet the time on station requirements meaning be eligible to PCS. Probably around the 12-18 month mark in most cases or anytime on a short tour in Korea.

I however would recommend you just put your packet in every year no matter what your status is. Whats the worse they can say, NO? Let them figure out what the rules are after the fact.

That's a good call. Really I would like the course without utilization. I'd like Uncle Sugar to pay for some FW training but stay in the rotor community.

Well, it probably wouldnt happen until you become a senior W2 or making W3. Then unless you are in a critical MOS they need guys at the AEB's.

Also, depending on the FSDO it is blurry on what the fixed wing multi-engine qualification course actually qualifies you as in the real world. Some will squeak out a single engine commericial in addition, but it depends who you talk too, many have only been getting a multi-eng only add on from their local FSDO.

FW is nice, but it's not all it is thought of from the other side of the fence.

I know it's a pipe dream for a while. Does everyone start in a GUARDRAIL type unit, or do some go right to VIP? Is it hard to get into an active duty VIP unit once your in the FW system?

PS I realize the irony that I asked for these airframe specific rooms, then immediately jumped in asking all kinds of noob recruiter questions. Oh well.

This doesn't answer all of your questions and I probably know less than you do, however this was enlightening:

This may be useful as well:

I missed the question in this for awhile, sorry.

While it is feasible that you may get a VIP unit if you get a utilization tour, 99% chance you will go to a Guardrail unit because that is most of what active duty fixed wing is and thats were the priorty for fills are.

The branch guy put in his website to expect a AEB assignment hopefully followed by an OSACOM assignment. It doesnt always happen like that.

Anyone know if the 2-228 Avn, a C12 Reserve unit in PA, is moving? After I do some time in Reserve rotary, I'd like to switch to Reserve fixed-wing.

You will be a helicopter pilot. Fixed wing Aviators make up probably 2% of the total active duty Aviators in the Army.

There are also requirements to be met before submitting a request for the fixed wing selection board after you are an Army Aviator for awhile.

The only people that get it out of flight school are RLO's and Guard guys that have a previous agreement with their unit.
