I will probably be switching my MOS to 15G (if there is still a slot available in October '09) and am considering getting a part-time job as a flight instructor in the Williamsburg/Ft.Eustis area while I am at 15G school.
Is it possible to get a part-time job, or will I be confined to the base/barracks for the duration of training? |

Even as a re-class, you will still have classes Mon-Fri from 0800 to 1630. As far as I've heard, you will be released after classes and evening formation, but you'd have to be back in billeting by a certain time.
I would advise against trying to have a part-time job during AIT. I think that would have to be approved by the BN/Bde Commander, who probably wouldn't approve it. Concentrate on your studies and do the best you can at AIT. Plenty of time for other stuff later on. Good Luck! Matt SPC, AV US Army OCS Selectee Class 303-09 |

Thanks for the reply Matt. It's good to hear that we will probably be released in the evening.
15G AIT is ~4 months long (without a recycle) and I am only an E4, so I am a little concerned about being able to pay the mortgage feed my family at home while I am away at AIT. My employer will make the difference in pay if I am deployed, but not if I'm at a school. I guess I'll just have to start saving money and vacation time to pay the mortgage while I'm away If I can't get a part-time flying job, or other part-time work. Another reason I'd really like to get a part-time job as a CFI/CFII while I am there is so that my flying and teaching skills don't deteriorate. Why would you advise against it? Also, is a reclass soldier typically allowed to have a POV at AIT? I've heard that 15G is one of the most difficult MOSs to qualify in. Why is that/what makes it so difficult? Is there usually alot of after work homework/studying to be done, or is most of the stuff at the school hands-on? Are there written tests and/or oral tests? How difficult are they? Are the practical tests extremely challenging? Any help from anyone is much appreciated. Thank you. |

Use this link to calculate what your pay will be, including Family Sep and BAH while you are at AIT.
http://www.defensetravel.dod.mil/perdiem/bah.html Finance-wise, you have the option to bring your family with you, or have them remain at your home of record and draw BAH for their location (while you are at AIT). |

Thanks for the link Mr_Motivated! That'll definitely help. I'm ARNG and forgot all about adding BAH to my base pay.
Family will stay here at home of record because the kids have school and sports. I'll be on my own for 4 months and draw BAH. |

I am a 15U so I don't know about the 15G coursework. The tests we had weren't that hard if you paid attention in class and studied a little on your own. Everything in the Army is geared towards the "lowest common denominator" so it is too easy to succeed.
As for POVs-- when I was at AIT, re-classes could have their own vehicles. I don't know what the current rule is, but when i was there, Hotel Company (re-classes) had it pretty good. Good Luck! Matt SPC, AV US Army OCS Selectee Class 303-09 |
