I am going active duty potentially from the reserves. I am an E-4 and looking into possibly re-classing as a 15P. I would like to know what the job is like, where I'd most likely go for a duty station considering post aviation isn't everywhere. What a day to day life would be like state side with this job and or overseas. Thanks

Okay, coming from a 15P.. unless you're in SOAR (as I'm guessing hit_it is) Being a 15P isn't all that hot. I haven't been in every unit in the army, but being deployed twice and seeing 15Ps operate in the same capacity army wide... I will tell you this...
-Every person in your unit will associate 15P with RTO. Unless you are in a line unit dealing with flight records... you will be a staffie... and if you're lower enlisted. You won't be the bottom of the totum-pole. You'll be the part that's under the ground... -I love aviation and I'm proud of my wings. But 15P is really a "No other option" MOS. Are severely color-blind? No problem! Do you have a major speach impediment? COME ON DOWN! Trust me, it's kind of disheartening to see that all of your fellow "Papas" are not top ASVAB scorers like yourself. Think hard about being a staffer. If you like paperwork, then this is right up your alley. 15P is not high-speed. The video they showed me was pretty darned close to an outright lie! Don't listen to the prospects of being a "Doorgunner". 1st the guns are in the crewchief windows... which brings me to 2nd You're not a crew dog... Use the MOS to rack up high level Aviation Contacts. You'll be a driver almost guaranteed at some point in your career. Use the MOS to have a front seat to the Super Bowl (but not actually be in any of the plays...) Then drop your Warrant Officer Packet. THANK GOODNESS I GOT PICKED UP! if you want to go aviation, enlisted... Go mechanic. (any kind really... but if you're an Apache/Kiowa mech you're not gonna fly) |

Phantom's got it right, just got back from a tour with the Guard in Kosovo for a year; I could literally feel my brain turning to mush from the lack of challenge. It was a 180 from Iraq in a Civil Affairs unit.
I wouldn't recommend it unless you love paper cuts and radio work. Mechanics definitely have all the fun. |
