Here's my current situation which has left me confused. I'm leaving in a few weeks to Rucker for WOCS as a prior service civilian. No basic or WTC but my recruiter says MEPS requires me to fly. This is apparently due to the fact that I won't get my orders until I in-process at Rucker.
I'm basically curious as to if I can drive to Rucker as opposed to fly, thus saving me an out of pocket flight and long drive later. Does anyone have any recent experience similar to this? Is it possible to request orders prior to arrival to take to MEPS and get authorized travel? Thanks.
Did some asking around and this is what I have come up with.
Your initial set of orders is cut with GOV't travel. However, if you have the time, you might be able to get them amended on DITY status if you play your cards right and the requisite planets align. This requires a call to your local MEPS operations officer and a good strong pleading on your part.
Here's the catch: since Government travel is authorized, they are only going to pay your for one day of travel expenses (about $118). If it takes you longer than that one day, the rest is on you.
Now, to be the realist....you are going to have to come here, get through WOCS, take your 10 days permissive TDY plus whatever leave you want when you leave WOCS and transition over to B Co. That is the normal flow of things and what you should expect.
