My daughter is ADHD and she has a strong interest in playing with things that are messy, gooey and yucky. I would like to what can I do to turn this into something positive for her?

Play-Doh. One thing that I know about folks with ADD is that they are among THE most creative people on the planet.
Invest in a good drop cloth, paint, paper, brushes, and clean up supplies....and turn her loose--you won't be sorry. You'll have the best collection of artwork. I used to set my daughter on the kitchen floor with trashbags that were cut in half and spread out on the floor secured by tape. I set out paint, Play-Doh, Gak, paper---everything she wanted to play with basically--and just let her have at it. When she got a bit older and I knew she wouldn't put things up her nose or in her mouth, I got her beads and string. I have quite the collection of necklaces and bracelets, key chains, and picture frames. She's pretty darn amazing at stuff like that. Art projects and such are so perfect for kids--and adults--with ADD. It's something that they can do in a short period of time, it's an accomplishment that has instant gratification, and they can move on to the next thing when they're done. Have fun!! |

Me and my daughter both have ADD. just let her play in a safe way. There are tons of recipes on the net for anything messy you can think of. My kiddo love's cooking so she loves making the play doh as much as she loves playing with it. We have every kind of Arts and crafts thing imaginable. she's got a whole rubber maid draw system with all of her stuff. |

I LOVE crafts...I'm OCHD (obsessive compulsive hyperactive disorder) with a few ADD tendencies every now and then. I really enjoyed the Klutz brand of crafts. I learned how to do all of the friendship bracelets and things.
I am a tomboy who happened to like some messier stuff as a child, too. My daddy used to take the hose outside and run water over the dirt and let me make mud pies and that kind of thing. Depending on where you live, that can be very fun as well. I would also recommend getting crafting books/magazines and order things for her to attempt discovering what she likes. Oh! Michael's and other crafting stores are GOD SENDS!! Trust me on this. When she gets a little older, I would recommend teaching her organizational skills...let her work with strings and beads for awhile with the string all tangled...let her teach herself to untangle it (that helps a lot in the future as well, trust me). After a year or two of that, try teaching her how to organize it neatly (if she hasn't taught herself already). HAVE FUN!! That's the most important part. |
