Our platoon song was to the tune of Cat's in the Cradle written by Cat Stevens (I think).

Boot camp was in 1985.

I remember some of the rewritten lyrics:

It's over now, this is our last day,
We came to the island in the usual way,
Took a plane across the USA,
Rode a bus the rest of the way.

??????? and we knew, we want to be like you ma'am...ya know we wanna be like you.

Oh, it's tough to be a woman Marine, ??????? with an M16....

(can't recall the rest)

Hey that's pretty good. I think ours went something like this:

4 o'clock already,
I was just in the middle of a dream,
I was buffing my boots,
by a dirty Parris Island stream.
I can't be late,
or the DI's will make me pay,
These are the days
that I wish my rack was already made.

Just another day in bootcamp,
Wish it was another day,
This is not a funday,
Another I gotta run day.

Not the greatest but the families loved it!

For some reason our platoon song was The Rose by Bette Midler. Everytime I hear that song I think of boot camp!

It's been so long ago, I forgot it. We sang the "We're Lady Leathernecks" song, and also "Give me a kiss by the numbers". The DI's from the other Plt.'s would come over to our squadbay and we would all sing "The Marine Corps Hymn". I always think of Boot camp, how it changed my life. Eventually I will remember our Plt.song. Semper Fi, LadyM59. Thanks Sgt. Shaw for taking over.

Sorry to intrude but.... what is a bootcamp song? I never once heard music other than reveille and church music while at Boot Camp. Is this a female only thing or something that just doesn't happen anymore?

Don't know if they still do it, probably not, but it is strictly a female thing that is why it is posted here in the Women in the Corps forum. Razz

I don't know what they are talking about either, we didn't have that when I went through in 1995.

Also didn't have it when I was a DI five years later. Unless N Company was just left out of the loop. Plus, my hard chargin' SDI wouldn't have allowed it anyway...heheheee! (Sorry TazDevil, had to give you up!!) Razz

BTW, congrats on the mod status Shaw!!!

A veteran - whether active duty, retired, National Guard or Reserve - is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand that - Author unknown.

I figured they did away with it. I guess things change, but sometimes not for the better.

Did they do away with designing and producing your platoon flag. They gave us paints, asked for artists in the platoon, and we painted it on a canvas laundry bag. Then we attached it to a guidon.

I think it was during 2nd phase, after out chowhall stint. Can't remember was was on it, but I loved doing it. Kind of gave me a mental break from the chaos.

I remember singing "Lean on Me" during our Free Hour, at the end of it:

Tile :Bill Withers - Lean On Me

Sometimes in our lives, we all have pain, we all have sorrow.
But if we are wise, we know that there's always tomorrow.
Lean on me, when you're not strong and I'll be your friend.
I'll help you carry on, for it won't be long 'til I'm gonna need somebody
to lean on.
Please swallow your pride, if have things you need to borrow.
For no one can fill those needs that you won't let show.
You just call on me brother when you need a hand.
We all need somebody to lean on.
I just might have a problem that you'll understand.
We all need somebody to lean on.
Lean on me when you't not strong, and I'll be your friend.
I'll help you carry on, for it won't be long 'til I'm gonna' need
somebody to lean on.
You just call on me brother if you need a friend.
We all need somebody to lean on.
I just might have a problem that you'll understand.
We all need somebody to lean on.
If there is a load you have to bear that you can't carry.
I'm right up the road, I'll share your load if you just call me.
Call me ( if you need a friend)
Call me
(Repeat Until Fade)

We sat in a circle on the floor in the quarterdeck, and linked arms around our shoulders.

I was one of the Chapel Guides (as well as the Platoon Guide) and before we sang it, I asked if anyone had anything to share or offer for prayers, since free time was when most read their letters from home, etc.

Even the DI's and SDI would come out every once in a while.

That was from Mar - May 91.

"The Modern Patriotism, the True Patriotism, the only Rational Patriotism is Loyalty to the Nation all of the time, Loyalty to the Government when it deserves it."~Mark Twain

My platoon did that but I graduated in '88. I think we did it before the rifle range.

Thanks frmr8511. Razz Big Grin

I do not remember having a song either. The only one I remember as a recruit and DI is the Lady Leatherneck song.

I know that we did the range flags when I left in 2002. Not sure about now I will ask one of my friends down there who is a hat right now.

Semper Fi,

SgtShaw....we did the FTU flag and Rifle Range flags when I was in. Yes, we designed and painted them. Boot camp for me started Oct 85.

I remember that because I was the one lying on the floor under the ironing boards after lights out with a flashlight drawing and painting them. Got caught by one of our DIs Cpl Nelson. She was actually cool about it and helped me paint. I remember we carried them during FTU and RR and then they were supposed to go somewhere to be displayed. I sure would like a picture of those.

I don't remember learning a lady leatherneck song....just the Marine Corps Hymn and our platoon song.

Danielle....I don't remember when we sang the song (probably before lights out or after our hour of "free time")...but, I know we sang it during the emblem ceremony before we graduated.

Wasn't that Emblem Ceremony a great moment? One I will never forget as long as I live. My favorite DI who road me hard was the presenter for me. She told me what she thought about me. Loved it.

I remember our platoon song, in 1981 was a remake of a Karen Carpenter song.

We're so far away
60 women coming from different worlds,
When we came here we weren't women,
we were girls,
Hopin' we would be women marines.
