OK all you Devil Dogs, perhaps someone could clear up an inquiry I have. See on the Navy side of things there are many discussions about people wanting to HM, but for females corpsman is closed, due to high numbers. However women are not allowed to go to the green side as a corpsman, so since I posed the question on the Navy side, I thought I'd check here too. Is there are reason that HM is closed to women for going with the Marines?

From what I recall, the majority of FMF HM's head to GCE's which may possible be in need of combat replacements. Combat arms MOS's are closed off to female Marines, which may be the reason why the green side for Corpsmen is closed to Navy females.

Basically, yes. We get numerous people asking about the job and many tend to be females looking into that job, but since there is such a high number of those looking, the rating is currently closed off to females. Males can get it, but most tend to go to the Marines, so basically looking at the reasoning behind it. The answer given helps clarify as to why HM is currently closed off to women and why women are not accepted to go green.

Women can be on the green side...we had several female corpsman in our unit and they deployed with us...one in fact (not lying to anyone) got sent out with a grunt company to go do female searches...so whoever told you that females cannot go green side is lying to you

Where prayl001 is technically correct- There ARE female 8404's and, they do get tasked to marine units; the Navy (and most other Organizations) will, at times, "close" a rating depending on manning levels.

In other words, if the quota of females in the 8404 rating has met or exceded planned manning levels, they will refuse to accept any further applications/volunteers for that rating!
