I usually dont post here. I have a legit Question? If the Marine Corps made Women Marines have haircuts like Male Marines. Would you have joined the Corps?
I have always been curious about that. I'm a grunt and never served with WM's..
Dang Y'all go bed early....
Hey look at this way no more bad hair days, lol! I wouldn't mind the GI Jane look.
I went to PI with shoulder length hair. It was hot and always in my way, getting dirty, didn't have enough time to wash it - frizzies, flyaways, curls. UGH. I went to the salon and got it cut. Not GI Jane but it was short. So short that I could barely pick it up between my thumb and forefinger. Super short on the sides and in the back and just a little longer on top. The best thing I ever did - one less thing to worry about the rest of training. I started to let it grow out again right after recruit training, but the super short hair sure served it's purpose during training.
So I have a question, my ship date isn't till March so I am trying to give my hair some length so I can put it up but what if I get to go sooner. It isn't quite long enough to bun, but it might be a tad too long to keep down. Really don't want to cut it, I will, but do they let you use bobby pins so I can pin it in every way possible to make a bun?
Not to sure about the bobby pin thing as that I'm not a female, but I am curious,I have heard of some units giving females page 11s for shaving their heads, especially in yuma and 29 palms..is their an order that says that females cant???
I don't have the order, but I can tell you from my experience, shaved heads would fall under "extreme" haif styles.
Long hair must be secured so that is does not interfere with your job and does not fall below the bottom edge of your collar. That means rubber bands and bobby pins CAN NOT visible when used to secure your hair.
When I had longer hair. I would do one French braid down the back. When you secure the braid with the band, tuck it up under the inside of the braid structure and you can secure it with one bobby pin that won't show.

It is considered to be eccentric and usually only allowed under medical circumstances.
A veteran - whether active duty, retired, National Guard or Reserve - is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand that - Author unknown.

I ship out on 20080128, and I'm now facing that decision. Short or keep it long? One question, are you allowed to use an insane amount of hairspray during boot camp? Other than this, I am good to go for boot camp and it could not come sooner.

Yes, you will be using an insane amount of hairspray to keep up your hair. You can buy it when the platoon makes their PX runs. You won't, however, be buying rollers, curling irons, etc. Only the basics are needed to keep your hair up and that is: rubber bands, bobby pins, gel and hairspray. No clips, no headbands, etc...
It will take you a few days or even a week to get used to putting your hair up and getting it to stay. The DIs usually give a hair class and after that it is up to you to keep it within regulation or the scissors come out.
Each platoon always has a recruit who can put up hair really well. They always help each other learn how to do it.

Sure, you can bring it. But it will be put in storage to be taken back out 2 days before graduation. You won't need it. There is NO time in boot camp to fix hair unless it's done on free time. By the time you graduate, if you have long hair, you will be able to put it up in about 30 seconds max - and it will be within regulation. Besides, long hair puts up better when it's wet.
Most of those DEP books are forever old. Some date back to when they gave the make-up class and used blow dryers and stuff.

Sorry ahead of time if I was supposed to request permission to post in here, I couldn't decide if that was just for the open discussion forum or not. Anyway, I'm shipping out to PI August 25th and my hair is shoulder length in the back and gradually becomes an inch past my shoulder in the front. I also have bangs that I grew out to reach my nose. When I put my hair back in a pony tail there is some hair in the back that doesn't quite reach.. it takes about two clips to keep it up. Any opinions on what I should do here? It's kind of that weird length where it's too long to have down and seems too short to keep up. The bangs also, any ideas? definitely doesn't reach my pony tail. Wow sorry this turned out so long! Thanks in advance
Conroy, is your hair going to be long enough to put up by August 25th or do you think it will just be easier to get it cut? If it can be put up within standards, then don't get it cut, if you want long hair. But if it will be easier to keep it in regs, cut it before boot and you'll be able to grow it out easier afterwards. I wore bangs for just about the whole time I was in the Corps and I still have bangs now that I'm in the Guard, but for boot camp and now, for my two-week annual training, I just slick all my hair back and slather it with gel because it's easier to take care of that way. I had no idea how to put my hair up correctly, but the DIs taught us how. I hope this helps!
that does help, thank you I think I'm just going to keep growing it out and if I can't keep it all up when I get there, I'll just let them cut it. I'm sure I won't care how it looks anyway!
Conroy: If you know what is good for you, you will sit down before you ship and figure out how you are going to do that hair of yours and FAST. The Marine Corps has ZERO tolerance policy on Bobby Pins showing at all. Unlike other services, NO devices can be visible when you have your hair up.
We are not the Army, Navy, AF or even CG so you better not have them showing.
I found that when my hair was long enough, I french braided it down the back, finished off the braid at the bottom as small as possible, rubberband at the end, and then tucked the braid tail back up inside the body of the french braid. I then could use one bobby pin up inside the french braid next to my skin to secure the end from coming back out.
You definitely can see the pin. You need to work on this, otherwise SNIP, SNIP!
hair isn't long enough to put up, nevermind braid. looks like snip snip it is
*edit* " Cell phones aren’t the only thing Marines can no longer wear on their uniforms. The Corps added “tobacco pouches/canisters, visible barrettes [except in physical training situations], and keychains/lanyards/security badges [except as required by the command in the work environment]” to its list of banned items. That means you can’t tuck your can of chewing tobacco between your goggle strap and helmet, or use the watertight pouches often attached on the front of body armor.

You don't want extensions in boot camp, trust me. There is no time for upkeep and you can't just go to the "salon" anytime something goes wrong with them (and something will, you can bet on that).
Recruits often go days or a week without washing their hair. They spray it to keep it up, take it down to wash and then put it right back up.
Don't do anything that will require upkeep. You have no clue the stuff you are going to do in boot camp that causes problems with hair. In that case, the scissors come out.
