All this talk about female Marines and the manner in which they are regulated to keep their hair is very comforting. My daughter is 20 years old and very beautiful with long dark hair down to the middle of her back I would hate to see her cut her beauty locks off when she leaves for boot camp. Her hair is very thick and she should not have any trouble keeping it in a (sock) bun. Smile

Hi ladies, I was wondering if those of you with short hair when you went through boot camp, did you find that your hair is always getting in your face? Like when you're pt-ing, doing pushups, running around doing various things. I'm going to OCS and I'm trying to figure out if I should grow out my hair or leave short. Thanks!

Hello stephy,

Personally, I have always preferred my hair shorter; I think I look better that way. But regardless...there are feminine short hair styles that are short enough all around that the hair won't fall in your face. It's just the matter of finding what fits you and the hair type you have.

I have fine, but curly/wavy hair and used mousse on mine during boot camp to give it some stick/body which help keep it place. You can also use gel, but depending on what time of the year you go through OCS, gel may start to ooze when you sweat and gets pretty gross...Roll Eyes

May I suggest that you visit a salon or beauty school that has those beauty books with several short hair styles that you can look through before you make the decision to cut. Wink

Good Luck!
Cyn~

I know most of the discussion is how to get long hair up, but just to add to the short debate...

I had mine pretty short. I got in trouble randomly in the corps, because it was eccentric to some, and not to others. I would blame it on the hairstylist and move on. The thing to remember is that, you're not in trouble until it's in writing. If you're really dead set on having your hair the way you want, hope you have an understanding unit. If not, you may be forced to grow it out a bit. Yes, you'll get crap from smartass marines, but you know, they're not really marines if they pull that crap. Putting people down isn't a quality a marine should have.

So yes, it can be eccentric. Of course, if you're african american, not a problem. Also, they tend to give you less crap if you always had it that short, rather than cutting in when in. But basically, it's a crap shoot.

Marine mom here -- be gentle with me Wink --my daughter had fairly long hair before bootcamp--she opted to stick it in a ponytail and have it cut off for Locks of Love -- www.locksoflove.org -- just before leaving. The best of both worlds.... short hair so she doesn't have to worry about sock buns or regulation length, and her beautiful long hair gets to be made into a wig for a child who cares a lot more about hair than the Marines.... just a thought! Smile

No choice for me during boot camp they made me pay for my hair to be chopped all off. They did anything to break me but at least I didn't have to worry about fixing it lmaooooooooo

Thank you HollywoodMarine for the pic.

I would like to add here that even though that bun is extremely attractive and neat, if it interferes (too high on the head; head band won't fit around it) with the wearing of any Marine Corps covers/head gear, it has to be re-done.

Which brings me to another reason why I personally wore my hair (and why other women in the Corps may have opted to) shorter...

...Covers/head gear; and if you are in an MOS where you are constantly taking them off and puting them on (which I was). I knew several of my sister Marines in my MOS end up cutting their hair after being told to "fix their mess", or "adjust the bun" because their covers/head gear was messing it up all day.

And, like myself, someone with thin hair has a harder time keeping long hair up no matter how well you try.

Just some more info to ponder...and I will say again...I am NOT telling anyone to cut their hair!! It is only what I did to make MY life in the Marine Corps easier.

Cyn
Wow!! This was me once upon a time...bump for someone asking about hair help.

I made the choice to cut my hair short before I went into boot camp like several others. YMMV (your mileage may vary). This is not stating that you should do this.

I was thankful that I had cut my hair short before entering boot camp...95% of the time you don't have time to give a rat's butt about what it looks like. Moroever, you have cover hair (aka hat hair) anyway from sweating, etc. You really don't get time to fuss w/it in boot camp.

When out in the fleet, I grew my hair longer and had to use a lot of gel or super strong hair spray to keep the wisps and my wavy locks tamed. I used to wash my hair and then use Dep gel and slick the sides back and then do up the back the way it was supposed to be. I'd then slap on some hairspray for extra security. My profile picture is similar to the hair I have now...but, when out in the fleet it was about mid-shoulder blade.

I cut my hair short, before boot camp, and I hated it. It took me forever to grow out, and I had a lot of trouble keeping it neat in the 'in between states' - also, taking cover off repeatedly, wearing cranials on the flightline, kevlar helmets, etc., were a pain. My hair gets very 'whispy', even when it's long, I have wisps. I also learned a single bobby pin in the wrong place can get painful by the end of the day.

One thing that worked for me - styling wet with mouse, and coating with hairspray like crazy helps control the wisps, but your hair is a nasty, sticky, crunchy mess at the end of the day.

I started picking up the jars of the thick cream sold for african american hair. It's greasy, but a little goes a long way, as it dries, it keeps the hair smooth. It's also super conditioning, instead of harmful like mousse and hairspray. Also, I could wear a kevlar helmet, gas mask or cranial with less pain, lol. My hair wasn't so stiff everything crunched when I put it on. ;O)

Ladies, greetings - I have an honest question about the hair bun. Can a female wear a "fake" bun in uniform? I never knew there was such a thing until a LCpl took hers off after I asked how she got it so squared away. Eek
Ah, to be 20 again.......
Have a good one!

Not really, unless your hair is also thin. I gave up on the sock buns because mine was too long and it was a pain trying to get all of it twisted around the sock. Now I just put it in a ponytail, braid it, and then twist it around itself.

Actually I've seen some people do it, but what they have to do is braid all the extra pieces and then twist all that crap around the sock bun and pin it down. I think it's easier just to braid the hair and forget the sock.

I didn't ask for that under my */*. It just showed up one day!

My hair was long before and after boot camp. I chose to keep it long because I don't think I look right with short hair. When I got to boot camp, I had no idea how to put my hair up. That usually consisted of twisting it up and putting a clip on it! They showed us how to use the sock to make a bun, and I used that in boot camp. After I got out, I would pull my hair back and put it in a pony tail. Then, braid it and put another pony tail holder at the end of that. I would wrap that around to make the shape of a bun and put another pony tail holder (three in all) to make it more secure. Place a few strategically placed bobby pins in and you're good to go!
And yes, you can wear fake hair as long as it looks like your own and natural.
For the ones who think there is a fine line between eccentric and not, I have to disagree. There are rules for a reason. Just adhere to them and don't see what you can get away with.

I also had long hair and did the sock bun thing for years. Then I started french braiding it and sticking the "tail" back up under the braid. My hair was down to my waist and I was still able to stick it all back up under there. Made it much easier to wear my cover cororrectly!

I had a feeling when I posted that it would not look right...my husband and I shared an account here, but both were in the USMC, he has been in the USCG since. I now have opened up my own so that we can both go in and update our profiles correctly. So, jaztcn will no longer be posting on this one..LOL

I'm in aviation in a foreign Military and was just curious how the gals who are around flightlines get around the hairpin and FOD issue. After years of fighting this issue our women are now allowed to wear their hair on Flightlines braided or with a single elastic band. Pretty much as long as it is neat and tidy and NO pins/clips. Airworthiness finally won out over normal dress regulations. Once they step out of the hanger/flightline enviroment then they are to have their hair as per the pic Hollywoodmarine posted or not below the collar
