Drill Instructors are nice?? Confused

Wait.....yeah, I guess there are a few like that.

A veteran - whether active duty, retired, National Guard or Reserve - is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand that - Author unknown.

We had one like that in my platoon too; SSgt Petterson-Harris.

She had been "selected" to become a DI and her heart just wasn't into being really "hard"; so it seemed that Sgt Rogers was twice as hard, LOL!! Angry Whip

SSgt Petterson-Harris often broke out laughing {had to rush out of the squadbay most of the time} at a LOT of the stupid shi'it that happened... Big Grin

I've taken the liberty in creating your platoon section in our database and adding your DI information as well.

Realizing a Dream

In 1996 this Marine (Cpl Miller), along with Cpl Moore and Angelo Russo (Air Force Veteran) took over the web site TheFew.com from a fellow Marine (Wally Bedeo) NOT realizing at the time what the future held in supporting our Corps and its Marines on-line. Over the years, TheFew merged with Military.com which led to the development of Marines Direct in 2002.

Although both TheFew.com and Marines Direct were good sites, they never felt like they covered the level of support we always wanted in supporting our Corps and our brother and sister Marines.

In 2004 a new plan (dream) started to develop to offer a more in depth web site that was more in line with each Marines history and the storage of information about that history, hence YellowFootPrints.

The goal from the beginning was to offer a place where that history could be stored for viewing by generations to come. It was to be a FREE web site open to Marines past, present, and future as well as non-Marines as in family members. This history was to cover the day a Marine EARNED the title United State Marine, while also covering each Marines time while in the Corps, and end with each Marines assignment to his/her final duty station.

During the first year of the web site the goal was to offer a boot camp database, obituaries database, and a database where each Marine could store his/she own information (members photo album/ information database).
In addition to the databases mentioned above, it was important to help Marines find their brother and sister Marines that served with them. One unique way to accomplish that task was to offer each Marine the ability to add their contact (email address) to a database for ease of contact. The contact information can NOW be found within the boot camp platoon sections where we list each Marine by name along with their personal contact information.

The point of this communication today is our ONE YEAR anniversary (August 12th 2006) has arrived and the realization of that dream. In the beginning our goal was never to look at the success of the web site by counting membership names or email address as other sites do. Our goal was to monitor the hit count on the site that would tell the real story of the sites usefulness. Today after one year of the site’s birth, we have a hit count of OVER 600,000 page views and growing.
The need for this type of Marine Corps web site is apparent by the amount of visitors, NOT members the site receives. Although I’d like to believe the success of the site is due to our work, I can’t even think that’s the reason.
The real reason the site is becoming successful is YOU, the visitors, and those behind the scenes; Marines and non-Marines who have supported the site.

From those that have donated funds, to the admin’s, and those that spend countless hours gathering information for our many databases; THIS is the reason this site will be around for years to come and enjoyed by many.

So, for those that have supported Yellow Footprints over this last year we say THANKS, and YOU ain’t seen nothing yet!

I'm new here.

I went to bootcamp from Oct 1981-Jan 8, 1982. (You'll notice I don't remember what day I arrived but I will NEVER forget the day I graduated!) I was in two platoons, two different series. First was 19A and the only name I recall was SSgt Young, a wirey dark-green Marine who got engaged while I was there. My senior drill instructor in 19A kicked me in the side when I was down in the sit-up position one day because she asked me my name and I told her my first name, not my last name! That's the only time I was struck in my entire 6 yrs in the Corps. We had a DI that was raped while I was going through that platoon. I am in contact with a former platoon-mate of mine and she can corroborate that. I was sent to EIP sometime after phase two for two weeks or so and then recycled into 20B. I don't remember any of the names of those DIs off the top of my head either. Sheesh! I'm gettin' old!

Having read through the posts, then spent an hour on yellowfootprints.com, I can say that I am the oldest one so far on this forum. It would be great to hear from old friends although I am still in touch with two of the friends I made from duty stations after boot camp.

Our days in the Corps were certainly different than what came later, but remember, the oldtimers in then had served in WWII. It was pretty tough to measure up in their eyes. Although it might have been physically less challenging, the discipline and psychological stresses were tough stuff.

No matter what, it was a great experience and I enjoy reading about what you ladies are going through today. My hat's off to you - keep up the good work.
