Shoot an e-mail to Sgt Shaw and ask her if the question should go here or not.

What ya want and it better not be stupid?! Oh and by the way we don't like FUC's (FRICKEN UNIDENTIFIED COMMENTATORS).

So if you intend to post here or other places within these forums...it would be a good thing to complete your profile.

This is my house and "I no listen - if you no identify"!!

Okay..I think I completed my profile. I didn't know I hadn't finished it. I'm new to this site. As for my question, I just wanted to ask what to expect of bootcamp. My recruiter told me its alot like the mens, but he can't really tell me too much about it, because, obviuosly he isn't a female and didn't go through female boot. So I was just wondering as to what to expect, and the hair regulations. And ect. Thanks.

I don't know what your recruiter told you. When I joined the Marines, my recruiter wrote me a letter, and asked me if she had forgotten to tell me anything. She forgot to tell me alot. You go to Parris Island and believe me, you learn quickly what you will be doing. Trust me on that. I joined in Sept.1959, I was a teenager, my mom had to sign for me. Semper Fi. LadyM59.

Well you first mistake was you screen name. It doesn't go over well to have Marine in your screen name when you haven't earned the title yet.

This is an exclusive club and we don't take it lightly.

Now, on to your question...
Most of us can't answer that question because most of us have been out of bootcamp for many years. Even 4 years out would change what they do today. He is right for the most part. It is just like the mens, but with a Lady Leatherneck kind of twist.

Checkout the WM Haircut thread in here and see what we have to say about that. I boils down to this...if it is long you have to be able to keep it up neatly and out of the way with no visible devices. If it is short the back can not fall below the bottom edge of the back of you shirt collar. NO excentric styles or un-natural colors. Meaning if your hair is Blond, it better be blond when you leave for boot. If it is Brown it better be brown when you leave for bootcamp. You will be there for three months and growth happens. Dark roots and/or Blond roots are going to be considered excentric and you will catch hell for it.

Fly under the radar. Don't be like me and end up on the quarterdeck everyday, several times a day.

Maybe one of the DI's will be by to lend current bootcamp knowledge. I defer to them.

SgtShaw EXTRADINAIRE, OUT!

Is there a lot of discrimination against female Marines?

Not as much as when I was in. Our current Lady Leathernecks should be able to shine some light on this subject. It has a lot to do with how you comport yourself within the MOS you end up with.

If you act like a sh*t, they will treat you like one, but that goes for male or female. The Marine Corps is an equal opportunity offender sometimes ya know.

Forgive me for jumpin in your forum but this will help a lil bit from my perspective in the 1990s they had the big military sex scandal and that changed many things in the service and the ladie Marines had it very tough back then. Todays corp is alot different for the most part but you will run across male Marines that are still from the old corp or new Marines that havent got a brain in their head yet.But if u do have a problem and u report it i can guarantee if its a legitimate gripe it will be taken care of swiftly. Hope that helps ya all out that are concerned as far as im concerned a Marine is a Marine sex ,color and creed is irrelevant

Okay thanks.I was just wondering, cause I have been told by a lot of people that women in the military become, well i hate to use the word ****, but i dont know what other way to put it. I dont think this can be true. because the military is suppose to be known for morals and respect and all that. So yeh..But thanks for clearing that up. I was also wondering, I know you all have been through boot. Is it easier to have longer hair or shorter? Cause i dont know which to go with...

My hair has always been long. That doesn't mean I knew how to put it up correctly, but I soon learned. The DI threatened to cut it off herself, but being the belligerent recruit I was (do not follow suit! Big Grin), that made me want to not cut my hair. How long is your hair?

well right now, my hair is shoulder lenghth. and I have bangs Im trying extremly hard not cut off shorter, cause I need to grow them out. They're at that awkeward lenth,in the middle, where you cant pull them back very easily but they're arent fun to have in your face. So I dont know if i would be better cuttin all my hair off short before boot, so its lower maintance or if i should grow it out. My mom has been pressuring me to grow it out, but shes always wanted me to have long hair..and shes not the one going through boot so..Cut it or keep it? what do you say?

I would say that you should attempt to put your hair up according to MC standards now and see how easy it is for you. As for your bangs, you could always put gel in your hair. If you prefer yourself with either long or short hair, just go with that. But, realize that you'll have to have your hair within standards everyday and everytime you have your uniform on. Like I said before, I had long hair the whole time I was in so I can't really comment on short hair, except for the fact my friend had short hair and she had to get it cut more often.

Okay ..well thanks much..I willl do what you said about attempting to put it up the right way...I had another question also..Okay so the area i was recruited in, Im the only girl, and when i go to marine meetings, its me and a bunch of guys. So i was wondering if there was something i could do get up to their standards. Cause i feel like the wimp in the group, cause these guys arent even built and they can do more than me.. and im a person who works out..Any suggestions?

I was the only girl when I was recruited, too. Just focus on your own goals and what you need to do to better yourself physically. Men are built differently and that's why we don't do pull ups. I could never do a pull up, but I could hang on that bar for more than two minutes and never did less than 70 seconds on a PFT. Just work on your weaknesses and don't worry about those silly boys! Cool

Hulin is correct. You only have to worry about what YOU are responsible for physically. That is why the standards are different. Men and Women are different physically and unless you are a "terminator" type female-shemale, you won't be able to do what they do. Just do what YOU are supposed to do.

Were you paying attention? Women only do the Flexed-Arm-Hang. It is OUR requirement/equivalent to THEIR pull-ups during a PFT.

Now, might you come across an occasion where a Recruiter, DI or later in your unit where someone might screw with you and try to make you do pull-ups, yes. You will have to deal with those situations as they come along.

But, as we have said, Flex is for women, Pull-ups are for men.

Oh and if you do come across a situation like that where they are dicking around with you and want you to try to do pull-ups. Just try and call it a day. Don't go all Betty-Bad-A$$ and make a big deal out of it by saying, "I'm not required to do that, so I won't.!" That will just set you up to be targeted for ridicule down the road. Just try it and move on. If you achieve it great, if you don't then chalk it up to being built differently. It is not a fault, NOT being able to do pull-ups.

The ASVAB is not a Marine Corps test, per say. It is a "General" test to where you are on your CURRENT knowledge. Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery....Focus on the Aptitude.

APTITUDE: a natural tendency to do something well, especially one that can be further developed

I didn't study for mine, it was unheard of. I realize that they have books that help you study for it, but I do not believe that is the intent of the test. You don't study for it like the SAT's.

Its intent is to show your "natural" vocational abilities. So the Marine Corps can place you in an area where you are best served, according to your natural aptitude to do that job.

DO YOU GET IT? It is not PASS/FAIL.
