I have moved since my last post, so I know longer have the option of 2E1. Here is my next question. I am going to the air guard and will have to cross-train. My options are 3C0 or 3C2. I know the basics about computers, but I want to learn more and go through a career change. I am majoring in Computer Management Information Systems and would like to get into a job that closely aligns with what I am going to school for. I am hoping to get into networking, but I don't know which AFSC would be best for me. What are the major differences? What are the ups and downs?
hey man, i graduated with a degree in computer information systems and I am going into 3C0. It def sounds like the best computer field to me. You get to do alittle bit of everything, get the feel for things, and then try to specialize after you have some expereince
Depends on what part of networking you are interested in. A 3C0 is mainly on the LAN side while a 3C2 and 2E2 deal with the WAN side. Depending on where you get stationed you could end up doing either job on matter which career field you choose.
I started my career as a Helpdesk Tech, which to be honest- kind of sucked, don't know if that's universal for helpdesks across the board or if being at a MAJCOM HD is what made it so terrible... a lot of stress and little appreciation was the name of the game, it isn't the most glamorous of jobs that's for sure, but you will learn a lot. Tech School will teach you the basics, as for myself; OJT hands on is where I learned most things. There are some cool stuff you can do though as a 3C0X1, after Scott I (currently) got stationed in Belgium where I'm one of a handful of techs who comprise the entire NCC (Network Control Center), I now do a lot more hands on work in almost all aspects of the 3C0 AFSC- server admin, HD (lightly, there are 3A's who take care of most of that here), messaging, COMSEC, overall LAN maintenance, even some stuff that's not typical of a 3C0 such as telephone switching... it's a really cool assignment. Best wishes to you in your decision, 3C0s work closely with the other Comm AFSCs, if you have any questions field them- I'll help with whatever I can.
I ended up taking a 3C2 slot, since it had more promotion potential (guard). Hopefully, it will align somewhat with my MIS degree plan. Thanks for the advice.

That is probably just for your unit becuase they are getting rid of the 3C2 slots. There is a plan to combine 3C0, 3C2, and 2E@ but it is still a few years down the road.
