What do they do?
When do they leave?
How often are they gone?
Were do they live?

Long story short I snowboard. I want snow top mountains in an Arabic life. I know the Himalayas are my best shot. Are there any bases around there? I might settle for learning Hindi or something else. I know Russian is available but I'm sure there are many Russian interpreters already.

I know there aren't a lot of military linguists out there so I want to help improve those odds, without losing myself.

Tinman -- questions regarding Cryptolinguists would stand a better chance of being answered on the Air Force General Discussion board.

Here's some general info for you and a few responses to your questions.

First and foremost, read existing discussions (on previously mentioned board) about this specialty. Should prove quite enlightening. Keep in mind though that many of your questions can't and won't be answered due to the sensitivity of the job they perform and OPSEC (security) reasons.

The primary difference between a 1A8 (Abn Cryptolinguist) and a 1N3 (Grnd Cryptolinguist) is where they perform their assigned duties/missions. Pretty simplistic, but one's in the air and the other's on the ground. Assignment locations for both specialties are extremely limited. In fact, many of the low-flow languages (small numbers) only have one (1) assignment location -- period.

Ain't gonna happen unless you take leave.

No -- none.

You don't get a choice on the language.

Yes there are, but there are some NPS quotas for Russian every year.

This thread is too funny. Not only do they not speak Arabic anywhere near the Himalayas, but we have no bases there as well. Plus, I was a 1N3 for six years and never heard of a Hindi linguist. We may have them, but it would be one of those AFSC's with only two billets available. Unless Bill or Joe are going to retire soon, no slots are opening up!
