I hope someone here can answer this for me...When I switched over (officially) into the Air Guard as Information Management, at first I thought it was one of those versatile admin jobs. However, after swearing in and chatting with my career counselor, she told me that IM has changed alot versus when she did it, she said it was computer based and in fact I'ld be spending a chunk of my time with other 3Cs during drill weekends to train up on computers in detail, much similar to those guys. I love computers so don't get me wrong...just wanted to know if she was just blowing smoke or is this AFSC (IM) at all similar (in the least possible way) with 3Cs?
Thanks for your time and I apologize in advance if I may have stepped on anyone's toes. |

No toe-stepping perceived, here.
I don't have an authoritative answer to your question, but I'll give you my perception. I think that it would depend more on your unit and specific assignment. This link goes into detail about the job descriptions in the 3C career field area. I don't envision very many of the 702s (formerly Administrative folks, before career field restructures) who worked for me being able to carry out these kinds of duties. Yeah, I can see where most of your work would be computerized. But there's a world of difference between using computers to do your job, and doing what the 3Cs do. Happy to be here, proud to serve. |

Not a problem. To get a more authoritative answer, you might want to post your question on the AF General Discussion Forum. There are a couple of 3Cs that hang out there, and I suspect more than a couple of Admin types--and, some of 'em might even have recent experience.

The role of CSA has been added to the IM career field. This is basically desktop/user support. You will create new accounts, reset passwords, load patches, etc. Nothing very technical and you should not be responsible for network maintenance. That still belongs to the 3C/2E folks.

welcome back |
I see IM'ers doing a lot more then "Information Management" right now. In fact, I'd rather be doing CSA duty then my current duty. As a programmer, I'm not doing anything I was trained to do in tech school. I'm essentially sitting in for a 3a.

Yah, my first drill this past weekend, they wanted me to attend training sessions with the comm guys. I'm also going to be working on monthly newsletters and coordinate with Public Affairs...seems like a pretty versatile job so far. |
