A little late on the response, but if you're talking about the AFSC 3C1x1, that is my current AFSC. But not for long. If you have any questions, fire away.

Well, to sum it up, I'm not sure how much longer the job will be around. Come October of this year, all 3C career fields will be a new identifier and a lot of 3C1x1s will be combining with other comm jobs. That's not to say they are completely on the chopping block. You still might be able to get the job and be stationed @ Andrews or Offutt. But I'm not sure. I don't know how the situation is for you "new" guys trying to get in. But for the 3C1s stationed @ Hurlburt Field, Kedena or Mildenhall (all AFSOC assignments), we are already making the transition.

I'm currently stationed @ Hurlburt Field and was a tactical radio operator. However, since last week, all of us 3C1s on base have had to combine with other comm career fields. I will be moving over to COMSEC/IA within the next two weeks.

But here is the down and dirty of the job frommy experience. Just so you know, it all depends on where you get stationed if you get the job...this is coming from 8 1/2 years of tactical radio operations. I can't tell you exactly what they do @ Andrews of Offutt, other than they talk on the radio. OK...

I do/did what part of the job description says, talk on the radio, A LOT. I used to work in the wing command post and talk to all of Hurlburt's aircraft flying local sorties and also talk to aircraft that don't "belong" to Hurlburt as well whether they are coming in or leaving the base. The types of calls/requests can vary widely in nature. I worked over there for almost 5 years.

I also have/had to go out and set up all the equipment we use, say, in the sandbox. Some of it includes the radios, antennas, cables, voice/data communications(phones, faxes). I am what is referred to as a "tactical radio operator" becuase we don't sit in front of a console that has been set up for us and talk. I have to set everything up myself and then maintain good communications with the aircraft. That is just a small taste of what I have done.

It can be a very gratifying job. I have been very lucky to be stationed here. It has been my only duty station though, and I got here back in Nov of 2000. So, yeah, it's been a while. Been to the sandbox 4 times and multiple CONUS TDYs as well. I will be heading out to Iraq next month again...

I wish I could tell you more about the other facets of the AFSC, unfortunately, I only know how we do the job in AFSOC.

As far as it being a hard job to get, I don't know. The ASVAB scores needed are not high at all. I came in open admin and got it that way. Tech school is 6 weeks @ Keesler. Like most jobs though, a lot of training/qualification is done once you get to your first duty station.

Hope this helps, and if you have any more questions, ask away!

If you really want the job, and it's still available, book it. They aren't going to do anything "official" until 1 Oct. Like I said, the actual AFSC of 3C1x1 - Radio Communications Systems, won't exist come Oct. I don't know what the identifier will be changed to (most likely 1B...) or the actual job name.

And if you come in now with that AFSC, you may be stationed somewhere other than just Andrews and Offutt. It just seems that a lot us went to either those two bases or Hurlburt after graduating from tech school. But there are other assignments for 3C1.

I hope I haven't confused you too much.

You still haven't booked a job? What's the holdup if you don't mind me asking...

I can't believe the AF is still offering this job. The identifier for the 3C jobs will soon be 3D.

Well, the short of it, yeah, 3C1X1 is going away. All 3C jobs are going to be 3D in the very near future. My base (Hurlburt) already got rid of 3C1X1s. We are already doing different jobs...some are doing 3CO and some are doing 2E jobs. On Hurlburt we are combining w/other career fields for our job now. And we are just waiting for the identifier to change (3D). We also have a new fuctional badge all ready to go now too.

I can't say what is happening at other bases where 3C1X1s are staioned. Only what is happening at Hurlburt. But regardless, the AFSC identifier will be 3D in the next few months.

I got lucky in all of this and am retraining into 1A4 next month...
