On a flight in a OV-10 Bronco we over flew a Nike Missle Site in West Germany somewhere I believe between Kaiserslauthen and Frankenthal. The pilot radioed our flight path over thier area and as we passed the missle site a missle raised and followed us.

The missile dose not track, The Nikes TRR and TTR does the tracking of the target object and passes the infor to the MTR then to the GCG of the missile for an intercept point if launch.
When I was stationed at Marine Corps Air Facility, Futema, Okinawa we had a Nike Base adjacent to the flight line side of the air facility.
I was a Marine Corps Combat Engineer TAD to the Sea Bees who were finishing up construction of the base. We were fabricating a Butler Building to be used as a warehouse right alongside the Nike Base.
There I'd be with my legs wrapped around an I-beam two-stories up bolting steel together when the Nike Base would run a drill. Sirens sounding, missiles rising, gates closing and locking, and teams armed with 3.5 Rocket Launchers and machine guns running to their defensive positions.
We'd wave from our somewhat perilous position, but great vantage point, and give them a cheer every time.
