After one of my son’s many rehabs (he could have taught rehab!), my wife and I were invited to an after care group hosted for the love ones of the rehab attendees. George, a talented jazz musician and x-drug addict, led this group. George had been sober for about 20 years.
I was still very resistant to sharing in group; however, George impacted me in a very major way. I was absolutely blown away by how this down-to-earth guy could read me like a cheap comic book. I became hooked on this group all because of George. George use to get tickled and laugh at how I was beginning to grow. Before a year was up, George came down with a very aggressive cancer and he was gone! Our group continued but it was never the same without George. George had a million slogans and he would throw them out like mardi gras beads. Most had to be thrown many times before they would work for me. Outside of group we called these slogans “georgeisms”. For George’s funeral we put together all we could remember and read them at his service. For example: “Acceptance is knowing the past will never get better.” If you have a good slogan (georgism) please share. Thanks |

When I was in trouble and facing all the unknowns of what life would be like living sober...I came across one I still use today.
Be brave, even if you're not, pretend to be. No one can tell the difference. Great idea for a thread...I love it! Terry |

Terry, a good friend of mine, sober for 28 years, often makes the point of how he MUST live by his committiments and not his feelings. Your slogan ties in nicely with his. Good post.
I read in one of my wife's books the other day: "ALANON's shortest slogan: THINK" one of my favorities: "Recovery is not clicking your heels three times and you are back in Kansas with Auntie Em." Remenber the evil flying monkeys? At some point you gotta deal with'em. |

We either deal with them or they deal with us.
The more areas I surrender to emotion, the more I become emotion-dependent. Emotions are not the tool for learning. Take care, Terry |
